Team History

The Florida Panthers joined the NHL as an expansion team during the 1993-94 season. With a unique brand and the sunny backdrop of South Florida, the Panthers quickly established a devoted fanbase. The Florida Panthers were born after the NHL awarded Miami an expansion franchise in 1992. Businessman Wayne Huizenga was the driving force behind the bid and became the team’s owner. They played their initial seasons in the now-demolished Miami Arena, sharing the venue with the NBA’s Miami Heat.

The Panthers built much of their inaugural roster through the 1993 expansion draft. Their selections included veteran goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck along with players like Scott Mellanby and Jesse Belanger. Driven by a passionate fanbase and the catchy “rat trick” craze, the team quickly earned a reputation for its thrilling, fast-paced style of play.

Notable Early Achievements

The Panthers defied expectations in their third season (1995-96). The team assembled a powerful roster led by Vanbiesbrouck, Mellanby, Rob Niedermayer, and promising young talent. That season, they shocked the hockey world by going on a Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup Finals. Though they were ultimately defeated by the Colorado Avalanche, their run captured the hearts of fans and remains a legendary moment in franchise history.

The Panthers experienced periods of success during their early years, making playoff appearances in the years following their Stanley Cup Finals trip. However, they were unable to repeat that playoff magic in later seasons as they stumbled into an ongoing pattern of inconsistency and rebuilding.

Their 1996 Stanley Cup Finals appearance was the franchise’s highest peak. Additionally, the team has won two division titles in its history (2011-12, 2021-22).

In the 2021-22 season, the Panthers dominated the league, earning the Presidents’ Trophy for having the best regular season record. Individual players have also received recognition, including Pavel Bure winning the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for most goals scored in back-to-back seasons.

Current Roster

The Florida Panthers currently boast a dynamic and exciting roster. The Florida Panthers play their home games at the vibrant Amerant Bank Arena (formerly known as FLA Live Arena) in Sunrise, Florida. The venue opened its doors in 1998, replacing the outdated Miami Arena and marking a new era for the Panthers.
