Team History
The Eastern Michigan Eagles football team has a rich history that traces back to its foundation in 1891. The team, originally known as the “Michigan State Normal College Normalites,” went through several name changes over the years, transitioning to the “Michigan State Normal College Hurons” before finally becoming the “Eastern Michigan Hurons” and then the “Eastern Michigan Eagles.”
The Eagles compete in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) within the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Their journey through college football history has been marked by periods of significant achievement and challenging downturns, including a notable 27-game losing streak in the early 1980s. However, the team also boasts five undefeated seasons, demonstrating their resilience and capacity for excellence.
Foundation and Early Years
The foundation of the Eagles dates back to when Eastern Michigan University established its football program in 1891. The team’s early years were characterized by rapid changes in coaching staff, with several coaches only serving for short periods. These years were formative for the program, laying the groundwork for its future development.
Among the early coaches, Fred W. Green stood out by leading the team to a championship in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1896. This period set the stage for future success and helped establish the program’s identity within college football.
Notable Early Achievements
Under the guidance of Elton Rynearson, the team experienced its greatest period of success from 1925 through 1939, with Rynearson Stadium named in his honor. This era was highlighted by multiple undefeated seasons, underscoring the team’s dominance in this period.
Another significant early achievement came under Coach Dan Boisture’s tenure from 1967 to 1973, during which the team maintained winning seasons for all seven years, including a 13-game winning streak that remains a school record.
Periods of Change
The Eagles’ history is also marked by periods of significant change and challenge. The early 1980s, under Coach Mike Stock, were particularly difficult, with the team enduring a school-record 27-game losing streak. This period was one of the lowest in the team’s history, characterized by struggles on the field. However, it was also a time of learning and rebuilding, setting the stage for future improvements and the eventual turnaround of the program.
