Georgia Southern University’s football program officially launched in 1981 under the stewardship of legendary coach Erk Russell. Russell, renowned for his spirited personality and innovative coaching philosophy, quickly instilled a winning mentality within the nascent Eagles team. The first few seasons were foundational, focused on establishing a strong team identity built on the principles of hard work and discipline.

The Eagles’ championships arrived in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999, and 2000.

In addition to national titles, the Eagles have captured numerous conference championships during their tenure in the Southern Conference. Their move to the Sun Belt Conference in 2014 presented fresh challenges, but the Eagles secured their first Sun Belt title in 2018.
