Team History
The Illinois State Redbirds football program has a rich history embedded within collegiate sports. Established in 1893, the Redbirds represent Illinois State University, one of the oldest public universities in the state. Their football legacy is one marked by grit, determination, and moments of brilliance.
Throughout their long history, the Redbirds have competed in various conferences. Their current home is the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC), which is widely regarded as one of the toughest in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
Foundation and Early Years
The Redbirds’ origins are traced to the late 19th century, playing their first official football game in 1887. Initially known as the “Normals” due to the university’s original name (Illinois State Normal University), the team competed as an independent for several years. Their early years saw modest success with occasional winning seasons, but they hadn’t yet firmly established themselves as a football powerhouse.
In 1923, the team adopted the “Redbirds” moniker symbolizing the school’s official colors. The early decades of the program laid a foundation upon which the Redbirds would build their future accomplishments.
Notable Early Achievements
Despite starting slowly, the Redbirds made a mark in the 1940s and 1950s. Under head coaches such as Clyde “Pop” Horton and Leo T. “Buck” Mackle, the team achieved notable winning records and gained recognition within the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC). The Redbirds won several conference championships in this era, demonstrating their growing ability to compete at a high level.
The 1960s witnessed the Redbirds transitioning into NCAA College Division competition. During this period, the team enjoyed continued success, with notable seasons under head coaches Milt Weisbecker and Larry Killen.
Periods of Change
The 1970s and 1980s marked a period of significant transition for the Redbirds. They moved up to the NCAA Division I-AA (now known as FCS) level, facing tougher competition. While these decades brought challenges, the Redbirds achieved several key milestones, including their first-ever playoff appearance in 1983.
The 1990s and 2000s saw the Redbirds maintain a consistent presence in the FCS (formerly I-AA). While championships proved elusive during this time, the Redbirds achieved respectable seasons and established themselves as a competitive force within the Gateway Football Conference, and later, the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Championships and Achievements
The Illinois State Redbirds have won five conference championships throughout their history, with titles in the IIAC (1948, 1949, 1950) and the Gateway Football Conference (1999, 2014). Although yet to secure a national championship, the Redbirds have made several FCS playoff appearances, including runs that took them as far as the quarterfinals (1999) and the semifinals (2014).
The Redbirds boast a list of distinguished alumni who achieved success beyond college football. Notable names include Kurt Warner (NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl MVP) and Boomer Grigsby (NFL linebacker).
Current Roster

The team is a mixture of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers who come together to form a cohesive unit. The Redbirds boast a diverse roster of players from across the country, each bringing their unique strengths and skills to the field.

Spack is assisted by a team of coaches with specialist knowledge in all aspects of the game.
