The Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team represents the University of Kansas and boasts a storied history as one of the most successful programs in college basketball. The Kansas Jayhawks trace their roots to 1898, just a few years after James Naismith invented basketball at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Jayhawks rapidly established a winning culture under founding fathers Naismith and Phog Allen, who coached at Kansas for an incredible 39 seasons.

Early success for the Jayhawks came quickly. They participated in the first-ever NCAA Tournament in 1940, securing a runner-up finish to the Indiana Hoosiers. Further national prominence came in the 1950s under Phog Allen as the Jayhawks won NCAA National Championships in 1952, led by Clyde Lovellette, and reached two further Final Fours in the decade.

The Jayhawks made an early statement as a national contender by winning the highly esteemed Helms National Championship multiple times in the pre-NCAA tournament era (1922, 1923). These national titles set a strong foundation for the team. The Jayhawks also became a dominant force in their conference, winning numerous regular-season titles in the early decades of the 20th century.

Roy Williams ushered in another era of success, leading KU to four Final Fours before departing in 2003.

Since 2003, under head coach Bill Self, the Jayhawks have experienced a remarkable resurgence. This period has seen the Jayhawks become a consistent force in the Big 12 Conference and on the national stage; a trend likely to continue into the future.
