Team History
The SMU Mustangs men’s basketball team has a long and storied history within college basketball. Their roots stretch back over a century, and the program has experienced great success alongside periods of challenge and rebuilding. Foundation and Early Years
The SMU Mustangs men’s basketball program officially began in 1916. In those early years, the team competed as an independent and later joined the Southwest Conference (SWC). Despite strong regional competition, the Mustangs quickly established themselves as a force within the SWC.
During these formative years, the Mustangs found themselves battling rivals like the Texas Longhorns, Baylor Bears, and Rice Owls. The intensity of these matchups helped solidify SMU’s place within Texas collegiate sports.
Notable Early Achievements
The Mustangs tasted significant success early on. Their tenacity paid off in 1935 when they clinched their first Southwest Conference championship title. The team wouldn’t stop there, repeating as SWC champions in 1937, demonstrating early dominance that put SMU on the map.
Beyond conference triumphs, the Mustangs even earned a coveted invitation to the inaugural National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1938, marking a major milestone for the burgeoning program. These early achievements showcased SMU’s potential on the national stage.
Periods of Change
Like many long-standing sports programs, the SMU Mustangs have faced ebbs and flows. The post-World War II era saw a degree of inconsistency, with the team cycling through winning and losing streaks. The Mustangs would find flashes of their former brilliance but struggled to regain the consistency that marked their early dominance.
The latter half of the 20th century saw significant shifts as the Southwest Conference disbanded in 1996. SMU became a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and later found a home in Conference USA (C-USA). Finally, in 2013, they joined their current home in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). These conference changes reflect the dynamic landscape of collegiate sports.
Championships and Achievements
Despite challenges, the Mustangs have continued to add to their legacy of achievement. They’ve won a total of 16 conference championships (both regular season and tournament titles) throughout their history. Additionally, their impact extends to the NCAA Tournament, where they’ve made 12 appearances over the years, They reached the Final Four in 1956, solidifying their potential on the sport’s biggest stage.
Beyond team accolades, SMU has produced numerous NBA players and All-Americans. The rich basketball tradition at SMU is a source of pride for the university and its supporters.
