Team History

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels men’s basketball team represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and competes in the Mountain West Conference of NCAA Division I. The team has a storied history known for its fast-paced, high-scoring style of play and its passionate fanbase. The “Runnin’ Rebels” nickname embodies the team’s exciting brand of basketball that captivated the nation, particularly in the 1980s and ’90s.

UNLV’s basketball program began in 1958. While their early years were marked by steady progress, the program didn’t gain national prominence until the arrival of head coach Jerry Tarkanian in 1973. “Tark the Shark,” as he was known, transformed the Runnin’ Rebels into a national powerhouse.

Tarkanian implemented his trademark up-tempo style, focusing on relentless offensive pressure and aggressive defense. He recruited players who fit this mold, many of whom were overlooked by other major programs, building an exciting and dynamic team that played with remarkable fearlessness.

Notable Early Achievements

Under Tarkanian, the Runnin’ Rebels quickly rose to national prominence. In 1977, they made their first Final Four appearance, showcasing their thrilling brand of basketball to the entire country. During this period, they dominated the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (later known as the Big West Conference), winning numerous conference titles.

The success of those early Tarkanian-coached teams helped establish the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels as a legitimate basketball power and laid the foundation for the incredible heights they would reach in the coming decades.

Periods of Change

Following Tarkanian’s departure in 1992, the program experienced a period of adjustment. While successors like Rollie Massimino maintained a degree of success, the Runnin’ Rebels couldn’t recapture the consistent dominance of the Tarkanian era. The late 1990s and early 2000s were marked by coaching changes and occasional scandals that somewhat tarnished the program’s reputation.

Despite these challenges, the Runnin’ Rebels remained a competitive presence throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s. Coaches like Lon Kruger brought stability and success, leading the team to NCAA Tournament appearances while fostering a new era of UNLV basketball.

Championships and Achievements

The pinnacle of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels’ achievements is their 1990 National Championship. That team, led by Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Greg Anthony, is considered one of the most dominant in college basketball history. They defeated Duke in the championship game by a record-setting margin, cementing their place among college basketball’s elite.

Besides their national title, the Runnin’ Rebels have won ten conference tournament championships and have made a total of 21 NCAA tournament appearances, including several Final Four runs. The program has produced numerous All-Americans, NBA draft picks, and professional stars.

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels play their home games at the Thomas & Mack Center, a 19,522-seat arena located on the UNLV campus. The Thomas & Mack Center is known for its electric atmosphere and is often considered one of the loudest and most intimidating venues in college basketball.
