Serena, Venus Williams lose 3rd-set tiebreak in US Open return - ESPN

NEW YORK — «Welcome to the Williams Show,» read one fan's sign in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night, as Venus and Serena Williams took the court for their doubles match, a quarter-century after first facing each other in the 2001 US Open final. A quarter-century of playing pro tennis at a top level — at any level — is not a very common thing. And even more incredibly, the Williams sisters, now ages 46 and 44, showed they can still come agonizingly close to beating a top team that is cumulatively around half their age. In a three-set thriller that delighted a packed and vocal evening crowd, the sisters fell short at the end, blowing a 5-0 lead in the final 10-point tiebreak to lose to Hao-Ching Chan of Taiwan and Maya Joint of Australia, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (10-7). So it was indeed quite a thrilling show — even the sisters themselves, narrowly defeated, walked off with smiles on their faces, though they declined to speak to the media afterward. • Serena/Venus Williams: First appearance in doubles together at a major since 2022 US Open | were supposed to play together in Serena's return at Wimbledon this year but Serena pulled out after suffering a knee injury in singles against Maya Joint • Sisters led the third-set tiebreak 5-0 before dropping 10 of the next 12 points • Their second major doubles match to go to a deciding-set tiebreak (2009 French Open Round 3, lost to Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Nadia Petrova) • Fall to 31-3 in the first round of majors as doubles partners • Match lasted 3 hours and 2 minutes • Maya Joint & Hao-Ching Chan advance to face Nicole Fossa Huergo & Tamara Korpatsch in Round 2 on Sunday — ESPN Research «It was an amazing match,» Joint said. «They played really well, and I think just the

Lane vs. Dabo, Mike Norvell vs. the hot seat and everything to watch in Week 1 - ESPN

Dabo Swinney rattled off the names of a half-dozen schools he had watched tape from to prepare for Clemson's season opener against a new-look LSU team with 40-some transfers on the roster. Oh, and he also spent some time scouting NFL camps, too. «I got to watch practice with the Browns in early June,» he said. «I'm probably going to get turned in for tampering.» Yes, Swinney's got jokes. His best work, he prefaced with: «No pun intended,» before suggesting Clemson would bow out of the debate about Lane Kiffin's desire to utilize multiple players who have been in NFL camps by saying his Tigers would just «stay in our lane.» Never mind that Swinney's pun game is always intentional. What a nation of frustrated fans heard from him was less a dad joke and more akin to the opening of a «CSI» episode. «We're just going to stay ...» Swinney pops on sunglasses as the opening howl of «Won't Get Fooled Again» plays, "... in our Lane." It took college football's most sacred tenets crumbling to dust this offseason, but here's the unassailable truth: Swinney's cool again, and in the battle of Tigers in the Bayou's Death Valley, Clemson is decidedly the good guy.

Dressing Room Misconduct Rocks Pakistan Cricket, PCB Sends Players Home

Pakistan cricket has once again been hit by major changes, with the team’s leadership and support staff facing continued uncertainty. After seven players and two coaches were sent back home, former Test cricketer and senior selector Aaqib Javed could reportedly be the next high-profile figure to lose his position.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has defended the sweeping changes, insisting that the decisions were necessary for the team. At the same time, fresh details have emerged surrounding the exclusion of Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Agha and Imam-ul-Haq.

Why Were Imam, Rizwan And Salman Sent Home?

According to a PTI report, recent performances were not the sole reason behind the trio being removed from the squad. A PCB source claimed that their conduct within the dressing room also played a role in the decision.

The three players could reportedly be asked to appear before a committee and explain their behaviour during Pakistan’s tours of the West Indies and England.

Imam-ul-Haq has faced additional scrutiny after previously being accused of pretending to be injured, adding another layer to the controversy surrounding his exclusion.

Mike Hesson Wanted Changes

Interim Test coach Mike Hesson reportedly had a significant influence on the changes made to the squad. He took charge of the red-ball side midway through the England tour after Sarfaraz Ahmed was removed from the coaching setup.

Hesson reportedly wanted to give opportunities to players who had impressed him during Pakistan’s white-ball assignments. His recommendations contributed to the decision to send several established players home.

Alongside the seven players, coaches Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul were also removed from their respective roles.

The overhaul has opened the door for several newcomers, with five uncapped players reportedly included in Pakistan’s squad for the third Test against England.

Selection Committee Could See Major Changes

The shake-up could extend beyond the playing squad. Pakistan’s selection committee is also reportedly heading for a major overhaul.

Misbah-ul-Haq has already indicated his intention to step down, while Aaqib Javed could also be removed from the selection setup. Reports suggest that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi wants to introduce a new structure, meaning further changes could follow once the England tour concludes.

A revamped selection committee could reportedly be announced after the series.

Hesson Could Take Charge Across All Formats

Another major possibility under consideration is Mike Hesson taking over as Pakistan’s head coach across all three formats.

Hesson currently works with Pakistan’s white-ball teams, but the PCB could consider expanding his responsibilities to include the Test side as well. However, such a move would depend on whether Hesson is willing to take on the demanding role of coaching Pakistan in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

Former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris left off LSU roster amid SEC eligibility dispute

Former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris were left off LSU's official roster ahead of Saturday's season opener against Clemson. The move comes after a Louisiana court granted them a preliminary injunction allowing them to pursue a fifth year of eligibility against the NCAA and SEC. Both players spent time with NFL organizations this summer before being waived. The situation highlights the ongoing legal battle over the SEC's rule barring former pros from college rosters.

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
