Assam’s Jintimani Kalita Makes India Debut in Women’s ODI Against Zimbabwe

Assam cricketer Jintimani Kalita achieved a major milestone in her career on Friday after making her international debut for India in the first women’s ODI against Zimbabwe in Vadodara. The 22-year-old right-arm medium-fast bowler received her maiden India cap from captain Harmanpreet Kaur, marking a proud moment for the young cricketer from Assam. Kalita earned her place in the ODI squad as a replacement for Renuka Singh Thakur, who was ruled out of the three-match series while continuing to build her bowling workload for the 50-over format at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The Assam pacer was also part of India’s squad for the preceding three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe but did not feature in any of the games. India won the T20I series 3-0 before turning their attention to the ODIs. Kalita’s debut comes after years of progress through domestic cricket, franchise competitions and India A assignments. Who Is Jintimani Kalita? Hailing from Assam, Kalita made history in 2023 when she became the first woman cricketer from the state to feature in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Mumbai Indians signed her for Rs 10 lakh at the inaugural WPL auction. She went on to play 13 matches for the franchise across two seasons, gaining experience alongside established international cricketers. In January 2026, Gujarat Giants signed Kalita for Rs 10 lakh as an injury replacement for Titas Sadhu. However, she did not get an opportunity to play for the franchise during that season. Kalita has also represented India A, featuring in the white-ball series against Australia A in September 2026. She had earlier toured England with the India A team, gaining valuable experience against international opposition. Her maiden appearance for the senior national side marks another important step in her journey.

Sri Lanka beat England with second-highest ODI chase

Janith Liyanage smashed a six off the penultimate ball as Sri Lanka completed the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, scoring 430-8 to beat England in Rawalpindi on Thursday. Needing eight to win off the last over, Sri Lanka lost two wickets to paceman Josh Tongue, but Liyanage kept his cool to achieve an astonishing victory and overshadow Harry Brook's record-setting knock. The England captain hit the fastest-ever ODI double hundred, making 202 off 116 balls to propel his team to a mammoth 429-4 after they were put in to bat. South Africa hold the record for the highest ODI chase, knocking off a target of 435 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006. Batters thoroughly dominated in Rawalpindi as Brook also hit the first ODI double century by an England player. However, Sri Lanka proved up to the challenge as Pavan Rathnayake scored 130, with Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both making 97. Liyanage then led them over the line with a blistering 61 not out off 27 balls. Sri Lanka slid to 24-2 before Rathnayake and Avishka set about transforming the innings, putting on 166 for the third wicket. Rathnayake then combined with Shanaka to lift the tempo with a rapid 133-run stand off just 79 balls, to give Sri Lanka genuine hope. Rathnayake hit 15 fours and three sixes while Shanaka's blazing knock featured eight sixes and six fours, as Sri Lanka delivered a powerful response to Brook's earlier masterclass. Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis was delighted at the victory. "I'm very happy as a captain," said Mendis. "Everyone believed we can do it. Every day we talk about showing the character in team meetings, and it's about showing we can get any score." Brook was full of praise for Sri Lanka. "Incredible game of cricket, both teams were exceptional. They played exceptional cricket to knock off 400," said Brook, downplaying his double hundred. "It was a nice innings but being on the losing side it has no value whatsoever in my eyes." Brook clobbered 10 sixes and 21 fours as England posted a first 400-plus ODI total in Pakistan. He reached 200 in 114 balls, beating the previous fastest double century in ODIs, by Shubman Gill (117 balls) for India against West Indies last month. Brook was joined in the fireworks by Joe Root, who scored a 66-ball 69 and became the first England batter to complete 8,000 runs, in his 197th one-day international. Brook was dismissed off the final delivery, caught off paceman Liyanage, but not before helping England add 156 runs in the last 10 overs. Opener Tom Banton set the tone with a 51-ball 50 and Will Jacks was 66 not out with three sixes and eight fours. The day looked as if it would surely belong to history-maker Brook, but Sri Lanka had other ideas as the previous highest ODI total at a Pakistan venue of 375-3 was easily surpassed. Pakistan, who beat Sri Lanka and England in their two games, will face England in Lahore on Sunday in the next match in the tri-series. (AFP) Edited by Cecil Wong

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
