Chris Woakes: ‘It’s unacceptable seeing the way some England players have acted’

The Test stalwart on his surreal last stand at the Oval, his ‘shabby’ treatment by Rob Key and the vexed problem of cricket’s drinking culture On a rainy October afternoon, after his 20th season as a professional cricketer, Chris Woakes sits down at Edgbaston’s indoor nets and thinks of the advice that helped him when he was 17 and about to start a career in this consuming sport. “The words came from my parents, particularly my dad, and it was to always be myself,” he says in his thoughtful way. Woakes has just won his third County Championship with Warwickshire and he played 62 Tests for England, taking 192 wickets and scoring 2,034 runs. He also won two World Cups and experienced a range of England coaches, from Andy Flower to Brendon McCullum, and played for captains as different as Sir Alastair Cook, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Aston Villa Thrash Fenerbahce 6-0 In Stunning Rout At Home

Aston Villa delivered a stunning performance to thrash Fenerbahce 6-0 in their UEFA Champions League 2026-27 league-phase clash at Villa Park on Wednesday, October 14. Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a deflected effort before Nicolas Jackson took centre stage, netting twice in the 31st and 39th minutes to give Unai Emery’s side a commanding three-goal half-time lead. Fenerbahce struggled to contain Villa’s attacking intensity after the break, and Ross Barkley converted a penalty in the 68th minute after Manzambi was fouled inside the box. Barkley struck again four minutes later to make it 5-0, leaving the visitors with little hope of a recovery. Substitute Tammy Abraham completed the rout with a close-range finish in the 90th minute as Villa celebrated a memorable European victory and continued their impressive home record.

Zak Crawley signs one-year Kent extension after losing England central contract

England opening batter Zak Crawley has signed a one-year contract extension with Kent, returning to the county as his primary employer after six years on the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) central contract list. A product of the Kent Cricket Academy, Crawley has made more than 180 appearances for his home county since making his first-team debut in 2017, scoring over 7,400 runs across formats. He has registered 10 centuries for Kent and is one of only seven players in the club's history to score a hundred or more across all formats. Crawley, who received Kent Men's Cap number 219 in 2019, was part of the county's T20 Blast-winning team in 2021. He has also featured in both of Kent's County Championship promotion campaigns, in 2018 and 2026, with the club set to return to Division One next season."I'm delighted to sign on for a further year at my boyhood county. It's an exciting time as we head back into Division One of the County Championship and I'm looking forward to the challenge of competing for Kent this coming Summer. It's great to see so many young players coming through the system here, similar to my journey into first-team cricket, and I'm excited to help them settle into the first-team and further their development for the long-term," Crawley said in a club statement. The 28-year-old lost his England central contract for the 2026-27 cycle after being dropped from the Test side at the start of the home summer, following an extended run at the top of the order. Crawley was one of only two players, alongside Lancashire's Luke Wood, to lose their deals on performance grounds when the ECB announced its list of 30 centrally contracted players this week. Kent Director of Cricket Simon Cook welcomed the extension, highlighting Crawley's experience and his role in supporting the county's younger players. "We're extremely pleased that Zak has extended his contract with the Club for what will be his 11th season in our first team. He is an extremely talented batter and is a huge presence in our dressing room."His experience of playing around the world not only benefits us on the field, but he is always willing to pass on his knowledge to our younger batters, something that will benefit us in the long term. His multi-format ability means that he is an integral part of our squad going into 2027," he said. The new deal will see Crawley enter his 11th season in Kent's first team, with the club preparing for its return to the County Championship's top division in 2027.--IANSvi/bsk/

About the news

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
