A familiar 3rd-place finish for S. Korea, but fewer golds and biggest gap with Japan

For South Korea, the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games ended Sunday with a familiar result but a growing sense of unease. Korea finished third in the medal standings for a third consecutive Games, but its 39 gold medals fell short of the 40 to 45 it had targeted. More strikingly, the gap with Japan — the country it had hoped to close in the medal race — widened to its largest ever. China dominated with 169 golds, followed by host Japan with 83. Korea finished with 39 golds, 43 silvers and 68 bronzes, whi

[Asian Games] S. Korea falls short of target as gap with Japan widens

NAGOYA, Japan — For the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games that ended with the closing ceremony Sunday night, South Korea had set out to win 40 to 45 gold medals and narrow its gap with Japan in the medal race. The country accomplished neither of those goals. South Korea finished with 39 gold medals for its third consecutive third-place finish, behind China and Japan, and this was also South Korea's fewest gold medal tally since taking home 28 in 1982. The gap between South Korea and Japan was much bigger than that between South Korea and the fourth-place finisher, India, which finished with 21 gold medals. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) had projected it would be difficult for South Korea to catch Japan, which it thought would enjoy home field advantage. However, Japan pulled away early, with South Korea not earning as many medals from some sports as it had hoped. During the first we

About the news

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
