Report: Flyers Eyeing Defensive Help Before Season

The Philadelphia Flyers may not be finished adding to their blue line before the season opens. David Pagnotta included a brief note on the situation in his Sunday column for The Fourth Period . "One team believed to be eyeing defensive depth: Philadelphia," Pagnotta wrote. The Timing Philadelphia's defense corps is already fairly set heading into the season, with Travis Sanheim, Cam York, Rasmus Ristolainen, Jamie Drysdale, and Nick Seeler occupying five roster spots. Stu Cowan: Re Canadiens: There’s no doubt Kent Hughes wants to make a trade, with his main targets being a top-six forward — preferably a second-line centre — and an experienced right-shot defenceman to play alongside Lane Hutson - Montreal Gazette (8/12) ____ NHLRR: Other… — NHL Rumour Report (@NHLRumourReport) August 15, 2026 David Jiricek and Oliver Bonk have been competing for the sixth spot throughout camp, with recent reporting suggesting Jiricek currently holds the inside track after a strong training camp. Pagnotta's note doesn't name a specific target, and it stops well short of suggesting Philadelphia is actively engaged in trade talks. Jamie Drysdale is one of the more interesting bounce-back defensemen on my board. 👀 2025-26: 78 GP | 7 G | 25 A | 32 PTS ⚡ 9 PPP 🎯 96 SOG 💥 18 HIT 🧱 102 BLK My 2026-27 projection: 74 GP | 9 G | 27 A | 36 PTS ⚡ 13 PPP 🎯 104 SOG 💥 19 HIT 🧱 98 BLK The biggest reason I… https://t.co/0IWdj416wb pic.twitter.com/1ZwxFbrmiz — Dobber (@DobberHockey) September 27, 2026 Pagnotta's same column also touched on Philadelphia in a different context, noting the Flyers are among a group of teams, alongside Montreal, Los Angeles, Boston, Carolina, and San Jose, that have "poked around" on Dylan Larkin's situation in Detroit since June, even though Philadelphia isn't currently on Larkin's approved trade list. GM Danny Briere has roughly $13 million in cap space to work with if the front office decides to act, giving the Flyers a lot of flexibility regardless of what direction they ultimately go.

Rangers Make Surprising Decision On Top Goalie Prospect

The New York Rangers made a gamble Sunday, placing goaltending prospect Dylan Garand on waivers as the team finalized its opening-night roster. Forward Taylor Raddysh was waived in the same round of moves. Garand now has until Monday to be claimed by any of the other 31 teams, and if he clears, he'll head to AHL Hartford rather than staying in New York's organization as a backup option. He appeared in three games for the Rangers last season and looked sharp, posting a 2-0-1 record with a 1.62 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage, making 35 saves in his NHL debut and becoming the first Rangers rookie goaltender to earn a point in each of his first three career games since Henrik Lundqvist in 2005-06. #NYR are putting Dylan Garand and Taylor Raddysh on waivers today, per league source. Team thinks Garand still has some developing to do and needs to be getting No. 1 goalie reps as a 24yr old. They're accepting the risk of losing him for nothing. — Mollie Walker (@MollieeWalkerr) September 27, 2026 The Rangers believe Garand, 24, still has developing to do and needs top-of-the-crease reps in the minors rather than sitting as an NHL backup. New York will instead rely on veteran Joonas Korpisalo behind starter Igor Shesterkin to open the season, even though Korpisalo posted a modest .894 save percentage with Boston last year. Insider Jeff Marek didn't hide his surprise at the move, and other Rangers outlets called it outright a mistake, noting Garand had outplayed Korpisalo in the preseason. Garand's underlying AHL numbers add nuance to the decision. He posted a 16-15-2 record with a 2.83 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage in Hartford last season, but the Wolf Pack were the worst team in the entire AHL, making his individual numbers look better in context than they do on the surface. For now, the Rangers are betting no other team pounces before Monday's deadline.

Why Sports Radio Should Give the WNBA a Bigger Seat at the Table Before It’s Too Late

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
