Superstar duo headline strong New Zealand squad for Rugby League World Cup

Superstar duo headline strong New Zealand squad for Rugby League World Cup Estelle.Bronkhorst Tue, 10/06/2026 - 12:00 SYDNEY - New Zealand named a star-studded squad led by Newcastle Knights pair Kalyn Ponga and Dane Gagai on Tuesday as they eye their first Rugby League World Cup title since 2008. Ponga and Gagai were both born in Australia but switched their allegiance to the Kiwis this year, given their Maori descent and after changes to eligibility rules. Gagai has previously represented Queensland in the State of Origin 23 times and has seven Australian caps, including in their 2017 World Cup final victory over England. Ponga has also been a stalwart for Queensland but has yet to play a Test. "We're very excited for this World Cup campaign," said coach Stacey Jones ahead of the tournament from October 15-November 15 in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. "We've been building towards this over the past few years, and winning the Pacific Championships last year was a big step in that journey. "I'm confident in this squad." New Zealand's 23-man roster boasts a formidable pack, led by Sydney Roosters premiership-winning prop Naufahu Whyte, four-time Penrith title winner Moses Leota and Brisbane Broncos player of the year Xavier Willison. New Zealand Warriors skipper James Fisher-Harris captains the side, which kicks off its campaign against defending champions Australia in Sydney on October 16. The tournament is slimmed down this year with 10 teams. Twelve-time winners, Australia are in Group A alongside New Zealand, Fiji and the Cook Islands. England headline Group B with Samoa and Lebanon, while Tonga, Papua New Guinea and France fill out Group C. AFP

'Pressure is also privilege': Priyansh Arya on his time with India A

Rising opening batter Priyansh Arya reflected on his time with India A as he gears up for the one-dayers against Australia A from Tuesday onwards. he called playing for India 'A' fun, as it gives the pressure but also the privilege. He scored a 101 against Australia A last year in Kanpur and has five more fifties in List A cricket."It's a lot of fun playing for India A, and to wear the blue jersey is a proud feeling," Arya told the media in Delhi. "I felt great to have scored a century for India A last year. There's a bit of pressure on you when you're playing for your country at any level. However, that pressure is also a privilege. I enjoy playing under that pressure and try to handle it well."The Delhi batter has been in the headlines in the past two Indian Premier League seasons too. He scored 475 runs in IPL 2025 at a strike rate of 179.24 and improved it in the 2026 season with 364 runs at 211.62.Arya claimed that his focus remains on capitalising the powerplay, rather than the strike rate. "I don't focus as much on the strike rate, but I still try to capitalise on the powerplay as much as possible," Arya said."I put in a little more effort during this IPL than last year, and it paid off. If there's high risk (in my approach), then there's high reward as well. I just have self-belief, and there are no doubts in my mind when I hit the ball."Even if I get out, I don't feel (bad) a lot. I always remain positive and confident. You can take your time in 50-over cricket, and I do that as well since there's less pressure (to score quickly). All I know is that in today's times, you need to keep improving every day, and that's what I strive for as well," he added.

About the news

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

How the news feed works

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
