Premier League: Suzuki's own goal helps Fulham hold Villa to 1-1 draw

John McGinn missed a penalty, and Zion Suzuki scored an own goal as Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham. Nicolas Jackson’s eighth goal of the season had put Unai Emery’s men ahead at the halfway stage, after John McGinn’s early penalty miss. But an improved second-half showing from the visitors saw them deservedly draw level when Zion Suzuki spilled Alex Iwobi’s corner over the line before they repelled Villa’s late advances in search of a winner to ensure the spoils were shared. Jackson continued his fine form in the Premier League, finishing off a well-worked move involving Johan Manzambi to give his side a 39th-minute lead at Villa Park, as Unai Emery's side searched for a third consecutive league win. That came after Fulham's Sander Berge was penalised for a handball early on, but Villa captain McGinn's spot-kick towards the top-left corner struck the woodwork. Fulham created plenty of chances, with Gonzalo Garcia at the heart of the action, but their second-half equaliser came unexpectedly as Suzuki dropped Alex Iwobi's corner into his own goal to mean that the spoils were shared. The point took the hosts up to ninth while Fulham rose to 15th. Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur secured their third successive Premier League victory with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Crystal Palace. Pierre Sage's side were dealt a heavy blow 13 minutes in when Jean-Philippe Mateta was shown a straight red card for a foul on Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. Archie Gray opened the scoring midway through the first half before Jan Paul van Hecke doubled the hosts' advantage after half-time to cap a dominant display at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Palace showed admirable resistance despite their numerical disadvantage but struggled to mount a comeback as Roberto De Zerbi's side comfortably saw out the victory. The result lifts De Zerbi's side to eighth, while Palace stay 18th.

Liverpool Edge Chelsea On Penalties To Reach Carabao Cup 2026-27 Quarter-Finals

Liverpool edged past Chelsea 6-5 on penalties to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals following a dramatic 1-1 draw at Anfield. In a frantic opening half, Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moisés Caicedo. Liverpool responded just three minutes later as Cody Gakpo converted a penalty of his own following a Wesley Fofana handball to send the sides level into the break. After a goalless second half, the tie went straight to a high-tension penalty shootout. Following missed spot-kicks on both sides, the drama stretched into sudden death, where Wesley Fofana missed for Chelsea before defender Joe Gomez calmly dispatched the winning penalty to seal Liverpool's berth in the last eight.

City, Liverpool scrape into League Cup quarter-finals

Liverpool beat Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to reach the League Cup quarter-finals, while holders Manchester City survived a scare against Brighton on Wednesday. In a clash between childhood friends Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso, it was the Liverpool manager who took the bragging rights in the last-16 tie at Anfield. A 1-1 draw in normal time set the stage for the shoot-out as Chelsea's Morgan Rogers netted from the spot, only for Cody Gakpo to equalise with a penalty of his own just before half-time. Chelsea's Valentin Barco hit the post in the shoot-out before Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas wasted a chance to win it when he blazed over. Ryan Gravenberch was denied by Chelsea keeper Mike Penders, but Giorgi Mamardashvili saved Emmanuel Emegha's kick to keep Liverpool alive. After Joe Gomez scored for Liverpool, Blues defender Wesley Fofana miscued into the Kop as the hosts advanced. It was former Liverpool midfielder Alonso's third defeat in his three visits to Anfield as a manager following losses with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024 and Real Madrid in 2025. In their debut campaigns at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot both reached the League Cup final and Iraola is on course to follow in their footsteps with the 10-time winners of the competition. Alonso made just four changes to the Chelsea side that lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday, while Iraola made seven changes from Liverpool's 2-0 win against Brighton on Sunday. Rogers put Chelsea in front with a 40th-minute penalty after Gravenberch clattered into Moises Caicedo. But Liverpool were level three minutes later with a penalty of their own as Gakpo converted from the spot following Fofana's handball. At the Etihad Stadium, City were pushed to the brink by Brighton in a 2-2 draw before winning on penalties. City boss Enzo Maresca made nine changes after Saturday's loss at Aston Villa, which ended the leaders' 100 percent start to the Premier League campaign. Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson and Gianluigi Donnarumma were among the City stars rested. Brighton went in front after 30 minutes when Malick Yalcouye steered Georginio Rutter's shot past Geronimo Rulli from five yards. Mateo Kovacic hauled City level 20 minutes later with a fine finish that curled into the far corner from 25 yards. Rutter restored Brighton's lead two minutes after half-time, slotting home from Jaouen Hadjam's cut-back. Vitor Reis deflected in Rayan Cherki's 72nd-minute free-kick to equalise for City. Kovacic's penalty was saved by Jason Steele in the shoot-out, but Rulli denied Brighton's Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to send City into the last eight. The sides meet again in the Premier League at the Etihad on Saturday. Bournemouth extended their blistering run with a 3-0 win against Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium. The Cherries beat AC Milan 3-0 in the Europa League last week and followed that up with a 3-0 win at Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. Marco Rose's men dispatched Villa in equally emphatic fashion as goals from Amine Adli, Lewis Cook and Alvaro Rodriguez made it five successive wins in all competitions. Crystal Palace eased the pressure on under-fire boss Pierre Sage with a 1-0 win at Fulham. Eddie Nketiah struck in the 37th minute to give struggling Palace their first win in five games in all competitions. Sunderland enjoyed a welcome respite from their Premier League struggles with a 3-2 victory against Brentford at the Stadium of Light. Sitting bottom of the Premier League, Sunderland swatted aside the Bees with goals from Chemsdine Talbi, Tymur Tutierov and Malick Fofana. Callum Wilson and Igor Thiago netted too late to save Brentford. Fourth-tier Fleetwood reached the quarter-finals with a stunning penalty shoot-out victory over Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday. Everton host Newcastle in the last game of the fourth round on Thursday. (AFP) Edited by Cecil Wong

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
