3 Reasons Ivar Stenberg Could Win the Calder This Season

Ivar Stenberg is worth a second look, because this young player might be the real deal for Calder Trophy talk this year. Shoutout right off the bat to Luca Pampena, whose Substack has some genuinely great draft and prospect breakdowns. If you’re into this kind of deep-dive analysis, go give him a follow, because a lot of what’s below is inspired by his Calder candidates preview.
So here’s why Stenberg’s got a real shot.
Most 18-year-olds are still figuring out how to survive against grown adults, but Stenberg’s been doing it in the SHL, one of the toughest leagues outside the NHL. He put up 33 points in 43 games there, which is legitimately impressive for a teenager. That’s not junior hockey production. That’s pro hockey production against pro competition. That kind of head start matters a ton when you’re talking about adjusting to NHL speed and physicality right away.
Stenberg’s not just a highlight-reel guy. He actually thinks the game at a high level. He’s a gifted playmaker who can also finish, and he plays a real two-way game too. He uses his stick well and backchecks consistently. Rookies who can produce points AND not get exposed defensively tend to hang onto ice time, and ice time is everything when you’re chasing a rookie scoring title.
San Jose’s still a pretty young team figuring itself out, which honestly works in Stenberg’s favour. He’s not walking into some stacked veteran lineup where he’d be stuck fighting for scraps of ice time. He can just come in and grab a real role right away, and that kind of opportunity is exactly what lets a rookie’s numbers explode.
Now, it’s not a slam dunk. History isn’t exactly on his side. Second overall picks seldom win the Calder in their draft years, and there’s still some uncertainty about where Stenberg lands in San Jose’s lineup and power-play usage. Those are real questions.
But between his pro-level readiness, his all-around game, and the opportunity in front of him, Stenberg’s got as good a case as anyone to be a Calder frontrunner this season. Definitely one to watch.
