Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Michael Arroyo’s first afternoon in the majors was relatively quiet. He didn’t get to have his first major league hit. No swing that turned T-Mobile Park into a frenzy. Arroyo had an 0-for-3 game, one strikeout and two popups in a 2-0 Mariners win.

The line was forgettable, but there was still a lot to like about his first game. There was little reason to expect Arroyo to have a Lazaro Montes-esque showing. But they can give us a look at the first real pressure points, and Arroyo showed us three. He can stay alive in counts.

His barrel never found a dangerous position. And the defensive question that followed him from the minors didn’t disappear. The downside is that the bases were loaded. There was one out in the fourth inning.

Seattle already led 2-0,And he didn’t try to be. Athletics left-hander Gage Jump quickly buried him 0-2. But Arroyo hung around. He spoiled three different offerings and made Jump work.

A 97.5 mph fastball, fought off an 85.7 mph slider and watched a curveball miss away. Jump finally ended the six-pitch fight by reaching back for 99.4 mph that Arroyo swung through. Mariners needed simple contact from Arroyo and didn’t get anything. But this was also Arroyo’s most revealing plate appearance.

He didn’t fold once he fell behind. He handled the change in speed, kept his hands alive and forced Jump to throw his hardest pitch of the battle. Arroyo saw 10 total pitches and swung at eight of them. That aggression fits the hitter Seattle promoted.

Arroyo reached the majors by attacking pitches he believed he could drive into the gaps. On Sunday, however, his barrel never joined the party. His two balls in play left the bat at 79.7 and 76.8 mph. Their launch angles were 63 and 69 degrees.

One settled into the second baseman’s glove. The other drifted into foul territory near first base. Neither ball threatened the grass. Basically they were misses.

But the aggressiveness and contact ability was there. He’s got a quick read and it’s obvious contact will not be this guy’s issue. He doesn’t need to become timid at all. Going 0-for-3 is no big deal, especially in a debut.

Going an entire game without squaring up one baseball gives Seattle’s hitting coaches something specific to work on. Arroyo received only two defensive chances. He fielded an Alika Williams grounder and threw to Josh Naylor for the out. Three innings later, he caught a Brian Serven liner.

He was removed before the eighth inning for a more reliable defensive glove,The switch made baseball sense with a 2-0 lead. It also offered a reminder of the current hierarchy. When Seattle wanted its late-game alignment, Young took over. Arroyo’s debut provided a baseline instead of a breakthrough.

He fought without finishing, attacked without squaring anything up and handled his limited defensive work without changing the larger conversation about his glove. All the Mariners have to do now is continue to play him. Loading recommendations...
