Africa’s university sports stars ready to shine

Cairo is preparing to become the center of African university sport as the continent’s student-athletes converge on Egypt for the 12th All Africa University Games, better known as the FASU Games Cairo 2026.

Taking place from 8 to 16 September 2026, the Games promise nine days of high-level competition, cultural exchange and university pride under the official theme “United by Sport, Inspired by Africa.”

Organised under the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU), the event represents one of the biggest gatherings on the African university sporting calendar. Cairo’s hosting will bring together universities and student-athletes from across the continent, with competition spread across a wide range of sporting disciplines.

A major continental sporting showcase

The scale of Cairo 2026 reflects the growing importance of university sport in Africa with the final field including 81 universities from 17 African countries, with around 2,000 participants.

For the athletes involved, the Games represent more than an opportunity to win medals. They provide a platform to compete against some of the continent’s best university talent while building friendships and connections that extend beyond the sporting arena.

That combination of elite competition and continental unity sits at the heart of the FASU Games. The event brings together sport, culture and academic excellence, while welcoming university delegations in a spirit of fair competition and cooperation.

18 sports, countless medal opportunities

The sporting programme offers something for almost every type of university athlete.

The Games will feature 18 sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, fencing, football, futsal, judo, karate, modern pentathlon, padel, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

The diversity of the programme should make for an especially compelling competition. Team sports will provide some of the most visible battles for continental supremacy, while the individual disciplines will give athletes the chance to establish themselves against the best performers in Africa.

Cairo steps onto the university sports stage

For Egypt, hosting the FASU Games represents an important moment for university sport.

The Games will be centred in Cairo, with Cairo University playing a major hosting role and accommodation support coming from institutions including the American University in Cairo and the British University in Cairo.

Egypt’s preparations have included using its national university championships as a testing ground for the continental event. That competition involved 73 universities, approximately 4,000 students and 21 sports, providing organisers with a practical opportunity to test logistics, competition management and event operations ahead of Cairo 2026.

A celebration of African heritage

Sport will be at the centre of Cairo 2026, but the Games are also designed to showcase the history and culture of their host country.

One of the most visible symbols is the official mascot, Tut. Inspired by the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun, Tut combines ancient Egyptian imagery with a contemporary sporting identity. The character represents strength, unity, heritage and youthful energy.

The Games will also coincide with FASU@55, marking 55 years since the establishment of the Federation of Africa University Sports. The anniversary provides an opportunity to celebrate the history of university sport on the continent and recognise individuals who have contributed to its development.

A torch relay has added another layer of anticipation in the build-up to the Games, travelling through a number of Egyptian universities before reaching the final host institutions ahead of the opening of competition.

With the opening ceremony approaching, attention now turns to the athletes, teams and universities that will compete for continental honours.

Cairo 2026 promises a meeting point between Africa’s sporting future and its rich cultural past: young athletes competing at the highest university level, universities representing their countries, and a host city ready to welcome the continent.

For nine days in September, the Egyptian capital will provide the stage.

The challenge for Africa’s university athletes is simple: perform, compete and leave their mark on the 12th FASU Games.

And with the continent’s best student-athletes heading to Cairo, the stage is set for an exciting celebration of African university sport.
