Jack Lonie spent seven seasons at St Kilda, alongside Paton.
"He's ultra fit and is a beautiful left-foot kick," Albury co-coach Anthony Miles said. "With Jake Gaynor going down with his knee we felt the need to replace him, although you've never going to replace the quality of Jake, but Jack will complement the other midfielders we've got with outside run."
Lonie was selected by the Saints at No. 41 in the 2014 national draft after playing for the Dandenong Stingrays.
He played 87 games, kicking 73 goals, at the Saints.
"We're incredibly excited to have someone of Jack's calibre, experience and talent joining our club and look forward to seeing what he brings to the Tigers in 2027," the club said on its Facebook page.
The 30-year-old has spent the past three seasons at Cheltenham in the Southern Football League.
The club has played Dingley in those three grand finals, winning the first two before losing this year's decider by 26 points.
Lonie was named in the best in the two-point win in 2024 and was then best on ground with four of the team's six goals in the 2025 decider.
And there's more good news with strong forward Mat Walker re-signing for the next two years.
Walker finished fifth in the best and fairest.
Paton won his second top award at senior level after claiming Mitta United's in 2015 as a 16-year-old.
Albury is still buzzing after former Richmond superstar Dustin Martin agreed to play at least one match, and possibly more, next year.
