Andrew McDonald is reportedly in talks over a contract extension as Australia's head coach. Here's what is known about the discussions and his future with the national team.
Andrew McDonald in talks for Australia head coach contract extension

Cricket Australia (CA) has begun discussions with head coach Andrew McDonald over a possible contract extension that could keep him in the role beyond the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The discussions come as Australia prepare for a significant transition in their men’s team, with several senior players approaching the latter stages of their careers. CA officials have praised McDonald’s record since taking charge in 2022, while stressing the importance of planning for the team’s future beyond its current generation of stars.

Andrew McDonald became Australia's permanent head coach in April 2022 and has overseen a successful period for the national side. Under his leadership, Australia won the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship, strengthening his position within the country's cricket setup.

CA chief executive Todd Greenberg confirmed that conversations about Andrew McDonald's contractual situation were underway. He also highlighted the board's confidence in the coach and pointed to the results achieved during his tenure.

"Yes, we are talking to Andrew McDonald about his contractual status and what that means going forward. He's held in incredibly high regard by the Cricket Australia board and by all of us. I think he's done an outstanding job, and I think his results tell you that," he said.

Outgoing CA chair Mike Baird also praised the partnership between Andrew McDonald and chair of selectors George Bailey. Bailey has held his position since August 2021, and the two have played important roles in Australia's recent success across formats.

Greenberg indicated that CA's discussions with Andrew McDonald extend beyond his contract and include how the team should be managed over the coming years. The board wants to ensure that the eventual transition does not undermine Australia's competitiveness.

"But in saying that, there's also an eye of what's coming next, and there's, no doubt, that there'll be a transition of this team, and we want to make sure that we can have oversight of that so that we protect and thrive into the next phase, whoever that might be," Greenberg said.

He added that CA was already examining how the squad could evolve over different timeframes, while acknowledging the quality of the current generation.

"We are in deep conversations about how this team will look and operate over the next six, 12, 18, 24 months," he said.

Greenberg also provided an update on discussions about private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL). CA is continuing the process involving the Melbourne Renegades and is in talks with state bodies about possible changes to ownership arrangements.

Victoria's second team and Tasmania are among those actively considering their options, while Western Australia has also been involved in discussions. Greenberg said decisions could emerge over the next six to eight weeks, although the final call rests with the states and their clubs.

"We're still working our way through that, but my guess is at the moment that certainly Victoria's second team and Tasmania are particularly weighing up what that looks like," Greenberg said.

He added that CA remained open to conversations with Western Australia, but stopped short of confirming which teams would move forward.
