Anthony Joshua has been using an ancient warrior stretching machine as he prepares for his long-awaited heavyweight boxing bout with Tyson Fury. The fight is expected to take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium in early December. The superfight moved from Madison Square Garden in New York after a venue dispute.
Joshua, a two-time heavyweight world champion, posted a video on Instagram showing him using a Pravilo machine. The device is a stretching machine that originates from Slavic and Russian traditions and was used by Cossack warriors for over 1,000 years. In the video, the 36-year-old is pulled into a starfish position by the modern version of the machine, which he keeps in his new training gym in Dubai.
The Instagram post is captioned: When the instructor says, relax and breathe. The video also shows Joshua's 251.0lb (113.9kg) frame being easily rotated 180 degrees, demonstrating his core strength.
The bout between Joshua and Fury has been uncertain for much of the year, but both fighters have been training in the gym. The fight was initially expected to take place at Madison Square Garden in New York but was moved after a venue war. Wembley Stadium in London was considered an ideal venue, but its strict 11pm curfew proved a sticking point. London mayor Sadiq Khan had said he wanted to ensure allowances were made to host the fight.
Boxing dealmaker Turki Al-Sheikh has been insistent on a start time of 2am. The streaming giant Netflix has yet to sign off on Cardiff, but American sportswriter Dan Rafael last week reported he had asked Netflix if they would approve. A source told him: I think they're OK.
Joshua will be returning to the Welsh capital where he has won twice previously. He beat Carlos Takam in 2017 and Joseph Parker in 2018 at Principality Stadium. A spokesperson for the Welsh Rugby Union said: We'd be delighted to host this fight. We are very keen to attract more boxing to the stadium, which has a rich history in the sport, enhanced by its closable roof, unrivalled sight lines and unique city-centre location.
Earlier this year, Daily Mail Sport revealed Joshua had quit the UK to move to Dubai. This came even as thousands tried to flee amid rising panic due to the conflict in the Middle East. The fight with Fury, known as the Gypsy King, is expected to be boxing's biggest battle of the year.
