India’s Manush Shah and Diya Chitale secured a historic bronze in mixed doubles table tennis at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya after reaching the semifinals. The duo had earlier produced a major quarterfinal upset, defeating Hong Kong’s world No. 4 pairing of Doo Hoi Kem and Wong Chun Ting 3-1. Shah and Chitale won the opening game 11-6 before Hong Kong fought back to take the second 15-13, but the Indians regained control with an 11-9 win in the third and closed out the match 11-5 in the fourth. Their semifinal run guaranteed India its first table tennis medal of the Games, although they later lost 4-0 to China’s Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin, with the Chinese pair winning 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 and 11-2.
India also added another athletics medal through Manpreet Kaur, who claimed bronze in the women’s shot put. The 36-year-old recorded a best effort of 17.17m, finishing behind China’s Song Jiayuan and Zhang Linru, who took gold and silver respectively. Manpreet began with a 16.32m throw but steadily improved throughout the competition before crossing 17m with her fourth attempt. Her medal made her only the third Indian woman to win an Asian Games shot put medal, following Barbara Webster in 1951 and Kiran Baliyan in 2023, both of whom also won bronze. Krishna Jayasankar Menon finished fifth with a best throw of 16.57m, while Song’s 19.40m season-best helped China extend its winning streak in the event to 13 consecutive Asian Games editions.
India’s medal tally now stands at 2 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze medals, taking the country’s total to 21 at the Asian Games 2026.
