ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Owen Jeffers, Scranton Prep football

The Cavaliers junior completed 16 of 20 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and added 59 yards rushing and three touchdowns on nine carries to lead Scranton Prep to a 37-36, triple-overtime victory over North Pocono, its first regular season loss in 16 games.
Family: Jamie, mom; Eugene, dad; Nora, sister.
What did you think of your performance, putting up big numbers in such a big game: I thought I played well, but it’s our team. We worked hard all week, practiced hard. We trust our guys, we trust our coaches, trust our game plan. It’s not just me. We trust our guys in a big game.
What was the atmosphere like in that game: It was a huge game. The atmosphere was great. It was packed, loud, especially down there toward the end zone in overtime. The band was playing, students from both sides, it was loud, but it feels great to get a win in an atmosphere like that.
How proud of you of this team for getting that win: I’m so proud of our team. It’s a huge win, huge momentum booster, had a lot of outside noise during the week, a few things happened. But, we rallied together and it’s a huge win to keep us rolling.
What has it been like for you settling into that quarterback position, especially following up a guy like Will McPartland: The past few years, Louis (Paris), Will are big shoes to fill. Early this year, we rotated at quarterback and I just knew when I got my opportunity I had to play my best this week. I thought I played well. I’ve just got to fill big shoes.
Braedon McPartland converts the game-winning two-point conversion on a bruising run. What’s it like having a guy like that on your team: It’s huge. He’s one of the best football players I’ve ever seen. He’s just so physical and willing to do anything to help the team win. It’s hard to stop him.
Scranton Prep always has a tough nonconference schedule to start the season. How has this team developed since the beginning of the season: We’re getting better every week. The start of the season, we gave up a lot of points down in Maryland. We played a really good football team (Loyola Blakefield). We have a lot of young guys starting up front, a lot of new guys getting new roles, but we’re learning, we’re coming together. Even around here, we’re playing good football teams, but I think our best football is yet to come.
What’s it like being a leader of this team: You can’t let emotions get out of control in a game like that. We play big rivals, big games on big stages. We can’t let our emotions get the best of us. You have to calm everybody down and play controlled, play our game of football.
Any thoughts about what you’ll do after high school yet: I’m not sure. Obviously, I’d like to play sports in college if I can, but we’ll just see where the future takes me.
Other sport you play: Baseball
Three people you’d like to have dinner with: Ian Book, Tim Tebow and Ben Roethlisberger
Athlete you admire: Tim Tebow. He’s a winner, and that’s what it takes to be a good football player. You’ve got to be a winner first.

Favorite sports teams: Notre Dame, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Yankees
Favorite TV show: “Sons of Anarchy”
Favorite musical artist: Green Day
