Doc Rivers Joins NBC Sports’ NBA Coverage as Game Analyst

Doc Rivers — a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coaching inductee, 2008 NBA champion head coach of the Boston Celtics, 13-year player, and veteran broadcaster — is joining NBC Sports as an NBA game analyst when its coverage of the association continues next month across NBC, Peacock, and NBCSN. Rivers has more than 40 years of NBA experience as both a player and head coach.

“I loved playing the game, I loved coaching it, and I’ve always loved talking about it,” said Doc Rivers. “I have great memories working with NBC, and I’m excited to be back and share my perspective alongside such a talented team. This season should be a lot of fun. I can’t wait.”
“It’s been 14 years since Doc worked for us as a studio analyst at the 2012 London Olympics, and we couldn’t be happier to have him back on the NBC Sports team,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer & President, NBC Sports. “Having led the Celtics to the 2008 NBA title with nearly four decades of NBA experience between coaching and playing, we are excited to add another Hall of Famer to our roster.”

Rivers, named one of the Top 15 Coaches in NBA History, has had an illustrious career. His accomplishments include winning the 2008 NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics and leading them to another Finals appearance in 2010; winning the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2000 with the Orlando Magic; and serving as an NBA All-Star Game head coach four times (2008, 2011, 2021, 2024). He ranks sixth on the NBA’s all-time list of coaches with the most wins (1,194) and fourth on the all-time list for most games coached (2,059). Aside from the Magic (1999-2003) and Celtics (2004-2013), Rivers also served as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers (2013-2020), Philadelphia 76ers (2020-2023), and Milwaukee Bucks (2024-2026). Throughout his career, Rivers coached 40 NBA All-Stars, 21 All-NBA selections, and one NBA MVP (Joel Embiid in 2023).

The No. 31 overall pick in the 1983 NBA Draft out of Marquette, Rivers played 12 seasons (1983-1996), primarily with the Atlanta Hawks, where he was named a 1988 NBA All-Star. The veteran point guard also spent time with the Clippers, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs. Rivers enjoyed a successful collegiate career at Marquette, where his No. 31 is retired by the school, and was also a decorated high school player, where he was named a First Team All-American and Mr. Basketball USA during his senior year at Proviso East High School in Maywood, Ill.

Following his retirement in 1996, Rivers began his broadcasting career as a commentator for Turner Sports before beginning his coaching career in 1999. He also worked for ESPN in between coaching stints in 2003-04 and 2023.

Rivers is the father of 11-year NBA veteran and NBC Sports basketball analyst Austin Rivers, whom he coached on the Clippers from 2015-2018, becoming the first father to coach his son in NBA history.

Rivers’ coaching tree has extensive roots with the NBA on NBC Sports team. He coached analysts Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill on the Magic, with the Hall of Fame duo combining for five NBA All-Star appearances and three All-NBA teams during their time with Rivers. McGrady also won the 2003 NBA scoring title and 2001 NBA Most Improved Player of the Year award in this span. Rivers also coached analyst Jamal Crawford on the Clippers, where Crawford won two NBA Sixth Man of the Year awards (2014, 2016), and analyst Brian Scalabrine on the Celtics, winning the 2008 NBA Finals together.

Andrés Cantor Joins Netflix’s Broadcast for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027

The “voice of soccer” is coming to Netflix for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

Legendary broadcaster Andrés Cantor — the first play-by-play voice announced for Netflix’s FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 coverage — will bring his signature “Gooooal!” to the historic broadcast.

Kicking off with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Final Draw on Dec. 11 and continuing throughout the tournament beginning June 24, 2027, Cantor will bring four decades of experience to the booth.

“I obviously want to be around the big games, the big tournaments,” Cantor tells Tudum. “The next FIFA tournament that is coming up is the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and I am more than thrilled that Netflix thought of me to be one of their voices in one of the most anticipated tournaments of next year.”

An Emmy Award winner and Hall of Fame broadcaster, Argentine American Andrés Cantor has covered men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups, the Summer Olympics, Copa América, UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League, and Major League Soccer, among many other competitions around the world.

Cantor has covered every men’s FIFA World Cup since 1986, along with four FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments — including the inaugural competition in 1991. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will be his fifth.

“For me, it’s not only my livelihood, but it’s my life,” Cantor says. “I breathe soccer seven days a week, 24 hours a day. I’m always watching a game. I always have this passion, and it transcends when I get to call the games in either language.”

Cantor has brought that passion to some of the biggest moments in the history of the women’s game. He points to Carli Lloyd’s hat trick against Japan in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final — including her unforgettable goal from midfield — as one of the greatest moments he has ever called.

“I knew I was witnessing history,” Cantor says, calling it “one of the greatest goals ever in the history of the World Cup.”

Netflix’s FIFA Women’s World Cup coverage will feature English and Spanish-language broadcasts in the United States, and English and French-language broadcasts in Canada.

“I will hopefully find a balance between addressing the hardcore aficionado who knows the ins and outs of the game, the rules, and [providing] further explanation of things that need to be contextualized for the casual viewer that only tunes in to soccer every four years.”

That also means going beyond the action on the field.

“We will be following storylines and telling stories about the athletes that we will be covering,” Cantor says. “And I will blend all of that into my way of calling games.”

One of the most recognizable voices in soccer broadcasting, Cantor’s internationally known Spanish-language play-by-play, commentary, and celebrations transcend languages, cultures and team allegiances.

For Cantor, calling a match in Spanish is about more than translating what is happening on the pitch.

“I think it’s not a question of language, it’s a question of how Latin Americans feel for the game,” he says. “[It’s the] passion that we have for the game, the love that we have for the game. We bring our passion to every broadcast and to every match.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup arrives in Brazil for the first time in 2027, following a record-setting 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand that Cantor says demonstrated just how quickly the global women’s game is evolving.

“The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand was one of the best FIFA Women’s World Cups in history,” he says. “All the stadiums were filled to capacity. The atmosphere was great.”

Cantor expects an increasingly competitive international field in 2027.

“The world is catching up to the big powers,” he says. “Most of the teams that will participate in the Women’s World Cup next year will be very, very competitive. And it’s in the mecca of soccer. It’s being played in Brazil for the first time in history.”

San Francisco Giants Broadcast Duane Kuiper Has Been Diagnosed with Throat Cancer

San Francisco Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper announced that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer and began receiving treatment earlier this month. Kuiper, who has called Giants games for more than four decades, missed the Giants’ three-game series at Dodger Stadium over the weekend and expects to miss multiple games this week on the team’s final homestand. The 76-year-old Emmy-winning broadcaster said he plans to call final weekend series against the Dodgers, which will be Kuiper’s last game in the booth with his longtime partner and friend Mike Krukow – who is retiring after the season.

Joe Buck Agrees to New $108 Million Contract at ESPN

ESPN’s Joe Buck has agreed to a new contract worth more than $100 million that will keep him as the voice of “Monday Night Football” into the next decade, according to The Athletic. The six-year extension, which is worth around $108 million, means Buck will not only call ESPN’s first Super Bowl in February but will also be on the mic for the network’s next one in 2031. Buck’s partner, Troy Aikman, remains unsigned.

Barry Melrose, Passes Away at 70

Barry Melrose, one of the most prominent analysts and ambassadors for hockey in the United States, died Wednesday at the age of 70. Melrose played 300 NHL games over six seasons and took the Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final in his first year as an NHL head coach. But Melrose’s role as an ESPN studio analyst became his legacy in the sport. He helped bring hockey to a mainstream audience from 1996 until 2023, when he retired after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Over four CFL seasons with Winnipeg, he became a fan-favorite by pairing a powerful rushing style with exceptional short‑yardage execution and an exuberant personality that connected with fans. He cemented his legacy in 2019 when he led the Blue Bombers’ Grey Cup championship run. His iconic fur‑coat celebration at the championship parade remains one of the most recognizable images in modern CFL history.
