‘Best All Around Coach in College Football’ Why Anthony Becht Says Matt Campbell is Built for Penn State

Make no mistake: Ames, Iowa is not State College, Pennsylvania.
Matt Campbell will coach his first game at Penn State Saturday afternoon, when the Nittany Lions host Marshall at 3:30.
Campbell will not only be facing Marshall; he’ll also be facing the expectations of 100,000 fans and an eager fan base.
One professional coach, who has not only played at the highest level but will have a front-row seat inside Beaver Stadium, believes Campbell is more than ready for the moment.
“I think Matt’s the best all-around coach in College Football,” Anthony Becht told NittanyCentral during a wide-ranging conversation ahead of Week 1. “When I think about dropping off my kid off in January of 2022, he (Rocco) is a better man today.
“Forget the football stuff. I just know that he’s (Campbell) been an extension to our family, almost like another father for him.”
Becht is currently the head coach of the UFL’s Orlando Storm, and has watched as Campbell and Rocco thrived in Iowa State.
The younger Becht will be making his 43rd start on Saturday afternoon, when he dons the Blue and White for the first time.
Becht arrives in Happy Valley with a 60.7 completion percentage, with 9,274 passing yards, 64 touchdowns, 27 interceptions, and a 26-13 record as a starting quarterback.
For Rocco, following Campbell east was an easy call.
“Listen, there’s a lot of opportunity there,” Anthony Becht said of Penn State. “I’d say there were about 12 schools that entertained Rocco, and he probably took five Zoom calls with them. At the end of the day, it’s about gathering information and doing what’s best for him. So, when all that process was done, and everything rolled back to Matt [Campbell], and Penn State, he just felt like, from a totality standpoint, that was the best option.
“For him to be with the same head coach, the same offensive coordinator, the same quarterbacks coach, the same training staff, the same weight room staff, that’s a huge, huge deal. He’s an extension of the coaching staff at this point. So, the opportunity is great. I think you always, as a player, you always want to see, ‘okay, like, we did really good things in the Big 12, and you know what your skill set is, what your level of competitiveness is, going to the Big Ten, playing at a historic program like Penn State, the opportunity was huge.'”
For Campbell, the opportunity is just as significant.
Since he first took the podium at Beaver Stadium shortly after being hired by the Nittany Lions, Campbell has stressed that he would only ever leave Iowa State for the ‘right’ opportunity.
Campbell’s 107-70 record put him on Penn State’s radar, and now he has the chance to prove the program made the right call, tapping him as the coach they hope can power a return to sustained National Championship runs.
When 106,000 fans pack into Beaver Stadium Saturday afternoon, all eyes will be on Campbell and Becht stepping onto the stage they were built for, ready to write the next chapter for one of the most storied programs in the nation.
