The road to NC State’s head coaching job now runs through The NFL Today.
In a letter to “Wolfpack Nation,” athletic director Boo Corrigan and Chancellor Kevin Howell said Corrigan will lead the school’s search for Dave Doeren’s replacement while leaning on the “counsel and expertise of trusted advisors.” That group includes two former Wolfpack players, Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher and Dewayne Washington.
NC State football coaching search will be led by Boo Corrigan, who will rely on “counsel and expertise of trusted advisors,” including former NC State players Bill Cowher and Dewayne Washington, per letter sent to “Wolfpack Nation” by Corrigan and Chancellor Kevin Howell.
Cowher remains the most decorated football figure NC State has ever produced. He played linebacker in Raleigh from 1975 to 1978 before an undrafted NFL career with the Browns and Eagles, and he later spent 15 seasons as the Steelers’ head coach, culminating in a Super Bowl XL title.
NC State fired Doeren less than a day after a 31-28 loss at Stanford dropped the Wolfpack to 3-4 and 1-3 in ACC play. Doeren departs as the winningest coach in program history, with 11 bowl bids and no shortage of memorable moments, whether he was telling Steve Smith Sr. to kiss his ass, trashing North Carolina in an ESPN production meeting, bristling at a Bill Belichick question, or snapping at a reporter who brought up his birthday after a blowout loss at Miami.
Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the year, while Cowher divides his time between the CBS studio and helping Corrigan and Washington vet candidates for the permanent job.
Cowher’s in his 20th season on The NFL Today, where he now shares the set with fellow NC State alum Russell Wilson, and he has said he only wants to stay where he feels appreciated and wanted. In Raleigh, that’s never been in question.
