The 2026/27 BUCS season ramped up this week, with 21 University of Nottingham teams in action. We saw unbeaten starts continue, National Championships defences begin and teams getting their campaign off to the perfect start.
Here are the key stories you might have missed from this week.
Both Men’s and Women’s Football 1s came into this season looking to get their hands on silverware, with the Men reigning National Champions and the Women looking to retain their Premier North title.
However, neither side got their season off to an ideal start, with both teams suffering opening day home defeats. The men fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat to Newcastle, despite Kene Ukatu notching a brace, while the women were defeated 4-0 by newly promoted Stirling.
There was equally little joy for the Men’s Rugby Union team, with the 1s falling to a third straight defeat at the start of their BUCS Super Rugby campaign when they lost 26-53 to Brunel. But the Women’s 1s did get their season off to the perfect start with a 50-12 annihilation of Newcastle thanks to five tries from Grace Annand.
Badminton made a perfect start to their campaign, as the Women’s 1s got their revenge over Strathclyde for their National Championship semi-final defeat last year with a 7-1 win over the Scottish outfit, while the Men thrashed Manchester 8-0. Fencing also produced a statement victory over Manchester, with the Men’s 1s winning 134-102.
Meanwhile, Netball also had a perfect start across the club, with both the 1s and the 2s defeating their Birmingham counterparts on the opening match of the season.
The Hockey clubs were the only teams to play away on Wednesday when the two sides travelled to Durham, and both the Men’s and the Women’s 1s extended their unbeaten starts to the season as two strikes from Zak Buck saw the Men draw 3-3, while captain Freya Robinson scored both goals as the Women drew 2-2.
