Canelo Alvarez Pursues Mbilli's WBC Belt Amid Saudi Security Concerns

Canelo Alvarez will challenge Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in what Bad Left Hook calls a potential "star-making" opportunity for the undefeated champion. The fight marks Canelo's first appearance since losing a unanimous decision to Terence Crawford last September.

Mbilli earned his title shot after a dramatic split draw with Lester Martinez on that same Crawford-Canelo card, a performance that left most observers wanting an immediate rematch. Instead, Mbilli took a 13-month layoff and landed the Canelo fight — a consolation prize few would complain about, per Bad Left Hook's preview. The Cameroonian power puncher has never lost but has been rocked in multiple bouts, including his breakout fight against Carlos Gongora.

Mbilli's willingness to trade punches could play into Canelo's hands, given the Mexican star's history of picking apart aggressive opponents. But Bad Left Hook notes that Canelo has not stopped anyone since Caleb Plant in late 2021, nearly five years ago. Mbilli may exploit what the outlet describes as late-stage Canelo's tendency to coast through middle rounds.

The undercard features three notable bouts: Lindolfo Delgado meets Arthur Biyarslanov for a vacant IBF super lightweight belt, Jaime Munguia takes on Nikita Zon, and Rafael Espinoza defends his WBO featherweight title against Ricardo Blandon. The DAZN pay-per-view is listed at $79.99 for non-Ultimate subscribers, with prelims streaming free at 9:15 a.m. ET.

Security concerns loom over the event. Bad Left Hook points out that Riyadh has faced near-daily bombardment from Houthi forces in Yemen, including strikes on the airport where fighters and officials must arrive. The US State Department ordered non-emergency personnel out of Saudi Arabia, and a major investment conference scheduled for the same week was postponed. The New York Times reported that a Houthi spokesman called the airport "a military target" and warned the Saudis would "bear responsibility for the consequences" after reopening it following a two-week closure. Bad Left Hook advises fans considering the PPV purchase to "wait until the absolute last moment to order, given the very real possibility that this show doesn't go off."

The prelims are set to begin at 9:15 a.m. ET on Saturday, with the main card expected to start several hours later.
