Canelo Confirms Mbilli Fight Amid Riyadh Concerns
Turki Alalshikh announced that Canelo Alvarez will defend his WBC super middleweight title against Christian Mbilli on October 31st at The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The confirmation comes with complications. According to BoxingScene's Lance Pugmire, VADA has not been contacted or paid for drug testing duties. The Mexico vs the World undercard remains unconfirmed, with Lindolfo Delgado versus Arthur Biyarslanov for the vacant IBF super lightweight strap and a Rafael Espinoza featherweight defense both in limbo. Per Bad Left Hook, neither Delgado nor Espinoza has received a contract.
The State Department advises travelers to reconsider visiting Saudi Arabia due to heightened risks from Iranian drone and missile strikes targeting American interests, armed conflict, and terrorism. Recent attacks hit Riyadh's main airport and other sensitive sites. The ongoing regional tensions follow retaliatory strikes that intensified this summer when the Houthis joined the Iranian campaign.
Bad Left Hook noted the event is just over a month away with no testing protocols in place and no finalized support bouts. Mbilli enters at 29-0-1 with 24 knockouts. The Cameroonian has built a reputation for relentless forward pressure and sustained power output across full twelve-round distances.
Alvarez carries a 63-3-2 record with 39 knockouts into the Halloween date. The fight was first revealed in July.
