Castletown secure landslide victory in southern derby

In a week dominated by local politics and the general election, attention switched back to sporting matters across the island on Saturday.

One fixture that stood out was the south‑east derby, where the early exit polls pointed towards a Castletown win against a faltering Malew.

Those predictions proved accurate as the Stadium outfit claimed a 5-2 landslide victory to maintain pole position in Ardern and Druggan Division Two.

Since Castletown’s inaugural relegation in 2006, the Mets have been promoted three times as runners‑up but never managed to cement their place in the top flight. Now, with a 100 per cent record, they sit proudly at the summit in Division Two.

Where early focus this season centred on Castletown and Malew setting the pace, the narrative has shifted. Malew’s latest defeat on their travels sees them lose further ground, with Castletown and Foxdale now emerging as the leading promotion challengers.

There was an impressive turnout, supporters voting with their feet as confidence continues to grow around the Stadium outfit.

But the first half was largely forgettable. Much of the play resembled a tennis rally - long balls traded from one end to the other, with little creativity or quality in the final third.

Town carved out the first meaningful chance when Ross Crawford’s strike was pushed wide and goalkeeper Ryan Duddy twice saved bravely at the feet of onrushing attackers.

At the other end, Jordan Cowin had a golden opportunity after latching onto a ball over the top, but Tony Harris produced a superb save.

The attack stayed alive as Krypner delivered a teasing cross, Cowin applied the faintest of touches and Harris again intervened to keep the danger out.

Just before half‑time, Malew made the breakthrough. Cowin was brought down by Jack Wallis in the box and referee Rob Slinger pointed to the spot. Cowin calmly stroked the penalty home to give the visitors the lead.

After the reset, Malew doubled their advantage. On 54 minutes, a corner was recycled back to taker Paddy Cooper whose centre was half‑cleared into the path of Sam Greasley to sweep home from close range.

That stung Castletown into life. The comeback began on 57 minutes when Jakob Glover engineered space on the right. His pass sparked a scramble as five Malew players converged on Alex Crawley who laid it off to Joel Callow to dispatch into the bottom right.

Three minutes later, the hosts levelled. Malew’s inability to defend set‑pieces - a constant Achilles’ heel - was exposed again as Crawford curled in a free‑kick from the left and Rob Teare found space to direct his header home.

Castletown now had momentum. On 63 minutes, they took the lead from yet another set‑piece. Crawley delivered another free‑kick from the left, deeper this time, and Tom Moore rose unmarked at the far post to head home.

Malew attempted to muster a response but couldn’t match Town’s energy levels and in the closing stages the hosts put the game beyond reach.

Tom Collister played a ball over the top, exploiting Malew’s high defensive line. Crawley raced through, nudged the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper and rolled it into an empty net.

Just before full‑time, Town added a fifth. Malew attempted to play out from the back, but Crawford pounced, squaring to Collister who had the entire goal to aim at. He placed his effort into the bottom left to secure a landslide victory for the Mets.
