A prolific night on the ground wasn’t enough for Air Force to overcome three costly fumbles in a 28-14 conference loss at Wyoming on Friday night.
The Falcons piled up 304 yards rushing and out-gained the Cowboys 387-301 overall. But they lost three fumbles, including two in the fourth quarter that ended drives when they were trying to tie the score.
Evan Medders led Air Force with 115 yards rushing. Gage LaDue added 57 yards, Rocco Conti had 48, Owen Allen 42 and Howard Fisher IV 38. Medders also threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Grant Wayne.
Wyoming quarterback Tyler Hughes passed for 113 yards with two touchdowns and added 146 yards and another score rushing.
Hughes’ 11-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Harris late in the second quarter gave Wyoming a 21-6 lead at halftime. Air Force pulled to within 21-14 midway through the third on Medders’ scoring pass to Wayne.
Air Force had a 15-play drive end early in the fourth quarter when Josh Johnson lost a fumble deep in Wyoming territory. After the Falcons forced a quick Cowboys three-and-out, Johnson fumbled again on the ensuing drive.
Wyoming then put the game out of reach on Markell Holman’s 1-yard touchdown run with 5:16 left.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak and dropped the Falcons to 5-2 overall on the season and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference. They host Connecticut next Saturday before playing at Army on Nov. 7.
