During the project to demolish and rebuild the nearby Abbey Fields swimming pool, extensive medieval remains were found underground at the site.

For this reason, the council has said it will take a measured approach to bringing the tennis courts back into use.

A council spokeswoman said: “In light of the site’s historical significance, and the lessons learned from the redevelopment of the swimming pool, when the discovery of medieval remains added significant costs and delays, Warwick District Council considers a careful and measured approach to this project to be prudent.

"Warwick District Council is committed to keeping residents informed about the tennis court plans and will provide a further update by the end of February.”

The cabinet will be presented with the report on Thursday October 22.
