David Ferrer releases statement as he confirms plans to step down as Spain’s Davis Cup captain

David Ferrer will step down as Spain’s Davis Cup captain after the 2026 tournament.

The 44-year-old was appointed captain of Spain’s Davis Cup side in December 2022, but has failed to deliver a seventh title for his country. Ferrer came closest 12 months ago, when his team lost to Italy in the final.

His team will have one last chance to win the title under his leadership in Bologna next month. Spain qualified for the 2026 Davis Cup Finals, defeating Chile 4-0 in September.

Ahead of his final appearance as Spain’s Davis Cup captain, Ferrer announced his intentions to step down on social media, thanking the federation, players, and fans for their support over the last four years.

“Hello everyone: I wanted to announce that this will be my last year as Davis Cup captain, giving up the year 2027. I want to thank the RFET for the opportunity it gave me to fulfil one of my dreams, which is to be able to be Davis Cup captain of my country,” said Ferrer on X (translated from Spanish).

“I also want to thank all the players and all the people who have accompanied me during this adventure. It has been a privilege to share this journey with all of them. The reasons for this decision are solely personal and respond to the desire to be able to start a new stage.

“From now on, I am only motivated and excited to be able to lead the Spanish team to another Saladera. We have a very nice challenge ahead of us in Bologna, where, as always, only they, the players, will once again be the true protagonists. Thank you all, and let’s go for it!”

Spain were without their star man, Carlos Alcaraz, for their defeat to Italy 12 months ago, but the seven-time Grand Slam champion could return to the side for the trip to Bologna this year.

The Spaniards will play Austria in the quarter-finals, a tie they will expect to win. Then, in the semi-finals, Spain will meet Germany or Great Britain. Team Great Britain have been weakened by an injury to star man Jack Draper, although their world-class doubles line-up may scare Ferrer. Germany are also a scary prospect, with two-time major champion Alexander Zverev leading the line.

If they can pass a tough semi-final test, Ferrer and his Spanish players will likely play Italy in the Davis Cup final. The Italians are the three-time defending champions and proved last year that they can win without world number one Jannik Sinner.

Sinner will be absent again this year due to injury, but Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Musetti will be keen to step up in his absence. Whether Team Spain can do what they failed to do last year and stop the Italians remains to be seen.

The 2026 Davis Cup Finals begin on November 24 in Bologna. Spain will play Austria in the quarter-finals on November 26.

Ferrer has one last chance to win the Davis Cup as a captain, but how well did he perform for his country as a player? The former world number three made his Davis Cup debut in 2006 and won 28 of the 33 matches he played for Spain.

He was an integral member of three Davis Cup-winning teams, helping his country win the title in 2008, 2009, and 2011. His Davis Cup legacy will remain intact even if his players fall short in Bologna this year.

Ferrer was particularly impressive in 2009 and 2011, winning every match he played in the two finals, as Spain defeated the Czech Republic and Argentina.

Ferrer’s five-set wins over Radek Stepanek and Juan Martin del Potro were crucial to Spain’s chances. Only time will tell if his players can embody that same fighting spirit in Bologna for the 2026 Davis Cup Finals.
