Doctor reacts to the ‘very concerning’ Raul Rosas Jr vs Raoni Barcelos finish at UFC Vegas 121

Doctor Brian Sutterer has shared his thoughts on the terrifying end of UFC Vegas 121.
Raoni Barcelos appeared to be on his way to a decision victory against Raul Rosas Jr. on Saturday night.
The 39-year-old was way up on the cards before he lost consciousness after being taken down in the final round.
Raoni Barcelos went out cold without taking a punch in the fifth round of his fight with Raul Rosas Jr.
Doctor Brian Sutterer has spoken about the ending of UFC Vegas 121 in a 10-minute video.
The sports physician, who reacts to in-competition injuries online, was deeply concerned about Raoni Barcelos passing out for no apparent reason.
Sutterer quickly ruled out a cardiac arrest before highlighting several potential causes of the incident.
“The ending of tonight’s UFC main event between Rosas Jr. and Barcelos ended in a very scary way, with a lot of scary scenes unfolding in the Octagon,” he said.
“It was nice to see we had a good, quick check of the pulse. We did not see any CPR, so presumably there was no cardiac arrest that was sustained. Therefore, cardiac things, at least initially, are not high on the list [of possible causes].
“Being a traumatic sport, with all the repetitive head blows at the end of the fight, we have to be prepared for the development of an internal brain bleed that became worse and got to the point where it finally caused him to pass out and lose consciousness at the end of the fight.
“That is going to be the worst-case scenario in this event. Hopefully, this is just something like crazy, sheer exhaustion, electrolyte abnormalities, dehydration, or even something like a buildup of intraocular pressure in the eye that caused a syncopal response.
“I think number one has to be that brain bleed, that brain injury.”
Raoni Barcelos’ coach offered a positive update after his fighter’s frightening loss at UFC Vegas 121.
“Hey guys, Raoni is fine, everything is alright, everyone can stay calm,” Davi Ramos said in Portuguese on social media.
“He just went to do the tomography now, but everything is fine.
“We are here waiting for him. Everyone can stay calm, thanks.”
MMA’s premier promotion issued an official update on the condition of Barcelos through its website.
“Following his fight tonight, Raoni Barcelos was immediately transported to a Level 1 trauma center for evaluation,” the UFC statement read.
“The hospital medical team conducted a CT scan and comprehensive assessment, and he is currently being monitored. Barcelos is stable, alert and responsive, with full movement. He will remain under medical supervision. We will provide updates on his condition as they become available.”
