Edwards 'thrilled' to join Argentina coaching ranks

Rumours recently circulated about Edwards potentially joining Steve Borthwick's coaching setup with England, but that speculation has now been put to bed.
The 59-year-old will fulfil a consultancy role with the England women's team before starting his new role with Argentina, working under Pumas boss Felipe Contepomi.
Following the appointment, Edwards said: ”I’m thrilled to be joining Felipe Contepomi, his coaching staff, and the Argentinian team at the end of this month and through to next year’s World Cup in Australia.
"I’ve always admired the skill and quality of Argentinian players, and I hope to contribute some of my international experience to the team over the coming year.”
Edwards - a hugely decorated coach - joined the France coaching staff in 2020 and helped them to win three Six Nations titles during his time there, before departing earlier this year.
He joins alongside former Argentina head coach and hooker Mario Ledesma, who has been appointed as forwards coach.
The pair will begin their roles at the end of the month, and Edwards will soon face his former side France as part of his first trio of matches with his new team.
As well as France, The Pumas will also play Nations Championship matches against Ireland and Italy in November.
Argentina will come up against Fiji, Spain and Canada at the World Cup next year, which takes place between October and November in 2027.
Before his role with France, Edwards spent time at London Wasps as defence coach. He was part of the team who oversaw the club winning three successive titles in England between 2003 and 2005, leading the club to glory in 2005 as head coach.
He was also defence coach for the British & Irish Lions on their tour of South Africa in 2009, and later joined Warren Gatland with the Wales national team.
While Edwards was part of the coaching staff, The Red Dragons claimed Grand Slam victories in 2008 - the same year he was named Rugby World International Coach of the Year - 2012 and 2019. They also won the Six Nations title in 2013.
As a player, Edwards played for Rugby League sides Wigan Warriors, Balmain Tigers in Sydney, London Broncos and Bradford Bulls.
