England vs Spain reaction: Three Lions eased to 6-1 for Nations League after Wembley defeat

Latest England news, analysis and betting reaction after the Three Lions' 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley, in which Harry Kane missed a crucial penalty
England vs Spain reaction: Three Lions eased to 6-1 for Nations League after Wembley defeat

England came off second-best in a topsy-turvy game against Spain at Wembley on Saturday and their Nations League odds have been pushed out from 9-2 to 6-1 as a result.

A Marc Guehi error – one which Thomas Tuchel denied had anything to do with Manchester City's looming sanctions – gifted Spain the lead through Lamine Yamal but England soon turned things around thanks to first-half goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.

It wasn't to be, however, as the 55th-minute curse struck again. That was the minute in which Gordon scored against Argentina in July's World Cup semi-final and it was all downhill from there as the Three Lions lost 2-1. It was a similar story on Saturday.

England were awarded a penalty following a trip on Jude Bellingham. It was taken and missed by the usually reliable Kane in that fateful 55th minute.

Just as it did in the World Cup semi, the tide turned and Tuchel's side had no response. Goals from Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal, breaker of England hearts when they last faced Spain in the Euro 2024 final, secured the victory for Luis de la Fuente's men.

The Wembley clash was De la Fuente's 50th game in charge of la Roja and he took his sensational record to 38 wins, ten draws and only two losses.

There is no denying Spain are the best team in the world and it was little surprise to see them shorten from 3-1 to 11-4 for Nations League glory.

Hills cut Spain's Euro 2028 odds from 4-1 to 7-2, although the original price is still available with most firms.

There is still lots of work to do for Tuchel if he is to usurp Spain in the Nations League, let alone a major tournament, and bet365 are not fancying England's chances of a recovery, pushing out their group winner odds from 11-8 to 3-1.

Spain are just 4-11 to top the section, with Croatia 7-1 and Czech Republic 150-1 after their 2-1 home loss to the Croats.
