Ex-Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United star to compete in charity boxing match - it’s live on Amazon Prime

Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Martin Woods will be taking part in a charity boxing match in London later this year.

The midfielder, who played over 137 matches for Rovers across all competitions joined the club from Rotherham United in 2007 and in his first season formed part of the team which won promotion to the Championship for the first time in 51 years. While he also formed part of the squad which won the League One title in 2013 to ensure the club secured an immediate return to the second-tier after relegation in 2012.

Woods spent seven seasons of his career in DN4 before going on to play for the likes of Barnsley, Ross County and Dundee among others.

Woods has been in and around the professional game since making his debut for Leeds United in the 2004/05 season but has never previously ventured into the world of boxing.

The former Scotland Under-21 international explains he was inspired to get involved by Graham Stack, a former goalkeeper for Arsenal, Millwall and Hibs among others.

Woods said: "It was Graham Stack, one of my old friends, who phoned me about it.

"I've never boxed before, so obviously I was a bit apprehensive about it, but he said it was for charities aiming to raise a lot of money.

"I am a rookie when it comes to boxing but essentially I'm just doing it for charity and it will be nice to help people because it's a great cause."

The event, which takes place on Thursday 22 October in front of the Amazon Prime cameras , will give the fundraising effort a significant audience, something Woods believes can help generate further support for the charities involved.

Woods added: "I am fully on board with Stack and what he's doing, I think it's amazing.

"Any support to the cause and myself would be greatly appreciated. Any help for the charities in any way possible would be greatly appreciated by all of us involved."

The footballers will be raising money for charities such as Willow Foundation, Helping Hands Barnet, Playskill, and Sport in Mind.

Here’s a full list of all the other former footballers taking part.
