Four Sheffield Eagles stars heading to Australia for World Cup

Sheffield Eagles will have four Wheelchair players representing their countries at the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup in Australia, with Luis Domingos and Chris Haynes selected for England and Sid and Gareth Ramsey named in the Wales squad.

Domingos and Haynes have both been included in Tom Coyd MBE’s final 10-man England squad, having initially been named in the 12-player training squad, and will now head to Australia for the tournament later this year.

The selection caps outstanding seasons for both players with the Eagles during the club’s second year competing in the Betfred Wheelchair Super League.

Domingos, who joined Sheffield from Castleford Tigers at the start of the season, made an immediate impact in his first campaign with the club, finishing as the Eagles’ top try-scorer with 30 tries.

His performances were recognised at the club’s end-of-season presentation, where he was named 2026 Wheelchair Players’ Player of the Year.

Haynes has enjoyed another impressive campaign, scoring 28 tries and making a number of important contributions for Greg Brown’s side.

His performances saw him named 2026 Super League Wheelchair Player of the Year, and he will now have the opportunity to represent England on the biggest stage.

England will face Wales, USA and Ireland in the group stages, with all three fixtures taking place at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong.

England’s first group-stage fixture will provide a particularly interesting encounter for the Eagles, with England facing Wales on Friday, October 30, potentially bringing all four Sheffield players together on opposite sides of the international divide.

Haynes and Domingos will be joined in Australia by teammates Sid and Gareth Ramsey, who have both been selected in Alan Caron’s 12-player Wales squad.

The selection of the Ramsey pair carries its own place in history, with two father-and-son pairings set to represent Wales at a Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup for the first time.

The Ramseys will join Martin and Matthew Turner in the Wales squad. Although a father and son have previously featured in the Wales set-up, never before have they represented Cymru together at a World Cup.

Sid has already earned senior Wales caps after representing Cymru at this year’s Celtic Cup and has enjoyed an excellent season with Sheffield, becoming a regular once again in the Super League side.

His performances earned him a nomination for the Shooting Star Award at the Eagles’ end-of-season presentation.

Gareth, who has previously represented the Wales ‘A’ team, is one of three potential debutants named in Caron’s squad.

He has also been a key player for the Eagles’ Wheelchair Reserves throughout the campaign, earning a nomination for the Wheelchair Player of the Year award.

For Sheffield Eagles, the selections mean four players from the club’s Wheelchair programme will take their place on the international stage in Australia.

For Domingos and Haynes, it is the reward for standout individual seasons and an opportunity to pull on the England shirt at a World Cup. For Sid and Gareth, it represents a historic opportunity to represent Wales together as father and son.

And with England and Wales meeting on Friday, October 30, the Eagles’ four representatives could soon find themselves on opposite sides of the international battle.
