Gabby Logan weighs into Sydney Sweeney controversy after Amy Hunt blast – 'So depressing'

Athletes from around the world have voiced their opinions on the controversial advert from Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney
Gabby Logan weighs into Sydney Sweeney controversy after Amy Hunt blast – 'So depressing'

The fallout from Sydney Sweeney's advert for a sports prediction company has continued, with Gabby Logan following Team GB star Amy Hunt in calling out the Hollywood star.

Sweeney was accused of demeaning and sexualising women's sports with the ad, in which she appears naked while covering up her body with sports paraphernalia. Four-time European athletics champion Hunt called out the actress after competing in the women's 200m at the Ultimate Championship over the weekend and now broadcaster and former gymnast Logan has chimed in.

"I just find it so depressing that here we are in 2026 where you think you’ve made progress in women’s sport," Logan said on The Sports Agents. "We’ve mentioned a lot of great women’s sport already, Chappers (Mark Chapman) was waxing lyrical about the Solheim Cup, there’s been a brilliant US Open women’s tennis final this weekend, there’s been the WXV international rugby on this weekend.

"There’s been a lot of incredible women’s sport to watch, the athletics as well, and that in 2026 an advert like that is still around. It’s such a tired cliche and I was glad all these female athletes got the opportunity to call her out."

Logan also said it was "disappointing" to see Sweeney go down such a route after starring in a biopic about American boxer Christy Martin in 2025. "We had Deirdre Gogarty on the podcast last week talking about women’s boxing and it just felt to me even more of a sucker punch that she (Sweeney) would then be somebody who would put herself in that position, understanding - hopefully, in her research of playing Christy Martin - the journey of women’s sport," she added.

The BBC Match of the Day presenter did still appreciate Hunt being given the opportunity to call out Sweeney after her own performance in Budapest. Not only that but she did so while bigging up her sprint rival Melissa Jefferson-Wooden.

"Sydney Sweeney, this is what women in sport look like," Hunt said after the 200m final: "21.4 [seconds]. Muscles. Hard work, blood, sweat, tears. This is a beautiful evening."

It wasn't just those competing in Budapest who hit out at the ad campaign. “I can’t describe how infuriated I feel when I watch this,” wrote Olympic swimming champion Ariarne Titmus.

“Not only is it a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft, but every woman who enjoys sports for what it really is – teamwork, friendship, dedication, excellence, unity. How do we live in a world where monetising a woman’s body and sexualising women’s sport is still a thing?”
