Garcia On Gervonta Davis' Motivation

Ryan Garcia suggested Gervonta Davis' recent inactivity and uneven performance against Lamont Roach may point to something deeper than physical issues, raising doubts about his rival's passion for the sport.

Ryan Garcia suggested Gervonta Davis' recent inactivity and uneven performance against Lamont Roach may point to something deeper than physical issues, raising doubts about his rival's passion for the sport.

"Got to be something mental. It takes a lot to be away from the sport a long time and then get back into it. That's why I like to stay active, and that's why I feel my best right now. He's been out of the ring so long, and the last outing wasn't that good. It could be playing on his mind a little bit, and he doesn't seem like he really loves the sport. It's much different when you love the sport, and you just love the money," Garcia

A proposed rematch would take place at welterweight without a rehydration clause, a notable jump for Davis, who's spent most of his career at 130 and 135. Garcia would carry a size and power advantage at the higher weight, though the extra pounds wouldn't fix the defensive lapse that led to his knockout loss in their first meeting, when Davis found his exposed body after Garcia raised his elbow attacking.

Davis' southpaw timing remains a separate concern, with Garcia's low lead hand and reliance on the left hook still a potential opening. The commercial dynamic has shifted since their first fight, with Garcia now carrying enough drawing power to help dictate terms — though his comments on Davis' commitment come with some irony given his own past struggles with suspension, weight and mental health.
