George Chuvalo dies at 89: The heavyweight who never hit the canvas

George Chuvalo, born Jure Čuvalo to Croatian immigrants from Ljubuški, has died aged 89. He passed away on September 12, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy in the world of boxing.
To boxing fans around the world, he was known as George Chuvalo—the Canadian heavyweight who stood toe-to-toe with Muhammad Ali and was never knocked down in 93 professional bouts.
Behind the name George Chuvalo was Jure Čuvalo, the son of Stjepan and Katica Čuvalo, who came to Canada from Ljubuški, in the Herzegovina region of what is today Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Chuvalo became one of Canada’s most celebrated boxers and one of the most respected heavyweights of his generation. He was a five-time Canadian national heavyweight champion and twice challenged for the world heavyweight title.
Yet one extraordinary achievement would come to define his career: in 93 professional fights, George Chuvalo was never knocked down.
His legendary toughness was tested against some of the greatest fighters boxing has ever produced. In 1966, Chuvalo challenged Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight championship, going toe-to-toe with the champion in one of the most memorable fights of his career. He would also face Joe Frazier and George Foreman, taking on the very best heavyweights of his era.
Ali himself later described Chuvalo as the toughest fighter he had ever faced.
Chuvalo had his own explanation for his legendary “iron chin”, famously attributing it to his short neck and a “head made of Herzegovinian stone.”
The reference to Herzegovina was particularly fitting given his family roots.
Although Chuvalo built his life and boxing career in Canada, he maintained a connection with the homeland of his parents. In 2009, he returned to Ljubuški for the first time in 39 years, where he reunited with family and spoke to students about the dangers of drugs.
In December 2011, Chuvalo returned to Ljubuški once again for the unveiling of a life-size bronze statue erected in his honour—a permanent tribute to a man whose name had become synonymous with courage, toughness and resilience.
For boxing fans, Chuvalo will forever be remembered for his willingness to face the best and his extraordinary ability to withstand whatever came his way.
Across 93 professional bouts, he never hit the canvas.
Chuvalo leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the boxing ring. In a poignant coincidence, he was born on September 12, 1937, and died on September 12, 2026—89 years to the day after his birth.
The punches have stopped, but the memory of one of boxing’s great heavyweights—and the man with the “head made of Herzegovinian stone”—will live on forever.
