George King turns screentime into showtime for San Miguel

GEORGE King is one of most prolific imports the PBA has seen in recent years.

But learning never stops for the former NBA player.

Showing how serious he is to master San Miguel’s playbook, King brought his own laptop in practice ahead of the Beermen’s 50th Season Governors’ Cup game against Terrafirma on Wednesday.

SMB coach Leo Austria said King was eager to ask about the details of the team's sets, as they geared up for the playoffs.

“I think it's important to watch film and show things. It's one thing to talk about it and say, ‘Hey, we should...’ But like, it's a whole ‘nother thing when you can show it,” said King, who played for the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks.

“And, you know, I'm going to say the cliché: film does not lie. And it does a lot of good for me, because obviously with me being an American, sometimes there's a language barrier and sometimes they may not understand me. But that film speaks all languages and we understand that film,” he added.

As a result, King further added proof to his elite scoring by dropping 44 points in San Miguel's 135-105 romp over the Dyip - which improved their standing to 9-2, still in the running to finish as top seed out of Group A.

The 32-year-old King knows the importance of always being a student of the game.

“Yeah, I think it's an understatement. I think that's where you see guys separate themselves. You know, you're able to play the game a step or two ahead of the guys that you're playing with on the court,” the Colorado product said.

“Because you watch film, you study it, you know what your opponents are going to do and for yourself, too. It's a lot of good that comes out of film. I think it's all upside. I don't think there's anything negative from watching too much. I don't think you can watch too much film. Maybe you can, but I haven't experienced that myself.”

But don’t bother asking what King and the Beermen watched on his laptop.

“I will not expose that,” he said.
