Jürgen Klopp has made it clear that he does not want Florian Wirtz carrying the burden of having to produce spectacular moments every time he steps onto the pitch for Germany.

The new Germany head coach spoke positively about his relationship with Wirtz, revealing that the two remain in contact while emphasizing that the Liverpool attacker’s work rate is already clear. Klopp believes the next step is creating an environment where Wirtz can contribute to Germany without feeling that every performance needs to be measured in goals and assists.

“The exchange with Flo was very pleasant. We’re keeping in touch from time to time. I think he’s the player who covered the most ground at Liverpool this season, so the willingness is absolutely there. We have to move away from expecting to see special moments from him. He needs to help us as a team. We have to make sure that Flo feels comfortable with us,” Klopp said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “When the team works, then every player shines as a consequence. We need to be satisfied when Flo Wirtz plays a game in which he gave everything but didn’t register a goal or assist. We simply need to give the boy the feeling: ‘That was more than good enough today. You helped us as a team. We won 1–0 or 2–0.’ - And then all the experts in the world sit there and discuss why he still hasn’t worked out. There are just as many reasons to say: ‘He’s working perfectly well.’ Now let’s take the next steps together’ — that applies for Flo and all the others.”

It is a notably different way of framing expectations around one of Germany’s biggest young stars. Wirtz has frequently been judged through his attacking production, but Klopp is emphasizing everything that happens before the final pass or finish.

The message is essentially that Wirtz does not have to be the headline every match. If he presses, runs, creates space, links play and helps Germany win, Klopp wants that contribution recognized even when the statistics remain empty.

That philosophy could also benefit Wirtz psychologically. Rather than constantly chasing the moment that proves his value, he can focus on becoming an important part of Klopp’s team.

And, as Klopp emphasized, the approach will not be limited to Wirtz. The new Germany boss wants the entire squad to understand that collective performance comes before individual numbers.
