Just 48 hours after the first game of the season, we already witnessed a defeat for a No. 1 team from the Globe’s preseason Top 20 rankings.
No. 1 Natick boys’ soccer, coming off winning a Division 1 title last fall, was stunned in its home opener, 6-1, by unranked Wayland, which got a hat trick and an assist from Tobias Kylberger and earned coach David Gavron his 200th victory in style.
▪ The No. 7 boys’ soccer team also faltered, as Newton South was defeated by No. 8 BC High, 2-0, in nonleague action.
▪ And over at Ipswich Country Club, there was no upset, but there was a measuring stick match between the Xaverian and St. John’s Prep golf teams, which finished 1-2 at last year’s Division 1 championship. The visiting Hawks won by four strokes thanks to even-par 36s from Tucker Pierce and Luke Edgar.
▪ Medfield’s Abby Hermann scored with 24 seconds remaining for a 2-1 field hockey victory over Ashland.
▪ Sarah Tressler scored with five minutes left to propel Central Cathlic girls’ soccer to a 1-0 win over Lincoln-Sudbury.
Taylor Bello and Sara Maroney, Hingham — The UConn-bound Bello, a senior, and Maroney, a freshman, both tallied two goals and two assists as the Harborwomen opened with a 7-0 girls’ soccer thrashing of North Quincy.
Ashlyn Faherty, Hudson — Just a freshman, Faherty opened her season with a 6-point performance, scoring three goals and assisting on three others in an 8-0 girls’ soccer triumph over Tahanto.
Jill Gagnier, Apponequet — By scoring the first two goals, then notching two assists, the junior powered the Lakers field hockey squad to a 6-0 season-opening win.
Tobias Kylberger, Wayland — In the boys’ soccer upset of No. 1 Natick, the senior delivered a hat trick and added an assist in a 6-1 demolition of last year’s Division 1 champions.
Catherine McCleary, Abington — The freshman wasted no time recording her first hat trick to lead Green Wave girls’ soccer to a 6-1 victory over Brockton.
Elena Snyder, Ursuline — The junior couldn’t have dreamed of a better varsity debut, scoring four goals in a 6-0 girls’ soccer victory over Norfolk Aggie.
Tessa Zielinski, Hamilton-Wenham — The junior set the program record for aces with 14 in a 3-0 girls’ volleyball win over Georgetown.
Notching their first coaching wins: Boston Latin boys’ soccer coach Steve Belge, Hingham girls’ volleyball coach Fabe Ardila, Abington girls’ volleyball coach Kaleigh Courtock, and Medway field hockey coach Adele Piotrowski.
