Globe Schools Insider: Three wild finishes, four D1 lacrosse commitments, and nine stars of the day

As former St. John’s (Shrewsbury) ace Sean Burke (4 innings, 3 runs, 8 strikeouts) helped pitch the White Sox into the American League Division Series — Middleborough’s Sean Newcomb also pitched for Chicago in the two-game sweep of Houston — the MIAA fall season wrapped up September in style.
Your weekly look at the top high school sports stories.
Let’s catch up on all of Wednesday’s highlights.
▪ With a goal and an assist in a 7-0 field hockey win over Silver Lake, Hingham junior Libby Baxter reached 50 career points.
▪ Junior Emily Deeks broke the Westford Academy home course cross-country record, winning in 18 minutes, 53 seconds against Acton-Boxborough.
▪ Bellingham senior Mia Milani eclipsed 1,000 career kills by slamming down nine in a 3-0 girls’ volleyball win over Holliston. She now sits at 1,007.
▪ On Tuesday, Smith Academy sophomore Sophia Jagodzinski reached 50 career points with two goals and an assist in a 4-0 field hockey win over Northampton.
▪ With 45 seconds to go and the score knotted at 1-1, Needham junior Lila Hassan found sophomore Kathryn Brinkhaus, who deposited the winning goal in the waning seconds for a 2-1 field hockey win over Braintree.
▪ Salem boys’ soccer trailed 2-0 with five minutes to play when Nile McManus and Henry Beauparlant concocted a late comeback, salvaging a 2-2 draw with Saugus with a late goal apiece.
▪ One of the wildest finishes of the golf season saw Billerica and Andover tied at 243 after compiling their top six scores at Indian Ridge Country Club, so they went to a seventh-score tiebreaker, which Andover junior Brendan Cote won, 43-44, over Billerica freshman Jack Egan.
Kyra Breslin, Central Catholic — The junior paced the rest of the 60-runner field by nearly two minutes, winning by 112 seconds in 19 minutes, 40 seconds to earn a 20-35 dual-meet victory over Lowell.
Ady Chua, Old Rochester — Just a freshman, Chua fired 11 aces in a 3-0 girls’ volleyball sweep of Greater New Bedford, adding 22 service points and 18 assists.
Calvin Guevara, Nantucket — The senior opened the scoring in the first minute and finished his hat trick by halftime in a 7-0 boys’ soccer triumph over Cape Cod Academy.
Isaiah Jeter, Cardinal Spellman — The senior provided a hat trick, adding an assist in a 6-1 boys’ soccer win over Arlington Catholic.
Owen Lestage, Norwell — The senior went low with a 3-under-par 31 at Presidents Golf Club to lead the Clippers to a 217-215 golf win over Archbishop Williams.
Ella McDonald and Molly Morgan, King Philip — The duo combined for seven goals, with McDonald, a senior, scoring four and Morgan, a sophomore, chipping in three to beat Stoughton, 8-1, in girls’ soccer action.
Lily Rego, Dighton-Rehoboth — The sophomore was equally effective in each phase, recording 12 kills, 17 digs, and 8 aces for the Cardinals in a 3-1 girls’ volleyball triumph over Somerset Berkley.
Michael Rogers, Hingham — The freshman logged a 3-under-par 33 for the unbeaten Harbormen in a 227-244 golf win over Silver Lake at the Country Club of Halifax.
For the first time in more than three decades, the MIAA’s ice hockey committee has a new chair.
Dan Shine, the former Arlington Catholic hockey coach and athletic director, stepped down from a position he had held since 1991, and a committee he had been a member of for 44 years.
“It’s been a wonderful experience,” Shine said at the start of the first committee meeting of the 2026-27 school year. “I’ve had the time of my life. I’ll still be around.”
St. John’s (Shrewsbury) hockey coach and AD Mike Mead was unanimously elected the new chair, with Westford Academy hockey coach and assistant principal Bob Ware continuing as vice chair.
“Dan, we appreciate your work,” Ware said. “When I started you were a pain in the butt, and very vocal. But one thing about Dan is he always protected the integrity of the game. I know you’ll be missed and you’ll be tough to replace.”
Outgoing Wellesley AD John Brown, who has been on the committee for more than 20 years, echoed that sentiment.
“His commitment to the sport of hockey, not only in this state, but in this country, is unmatched,” Brown said. “He loves doing the right things for the sport.”
▪ The committee voted 15-0 to make leaping into the glass a minor penalty in all cases. Currently, it is up to the official’s discretion if they deem the celebration to be unsportsmanlike or a safety issue. That rule change, along with another that tweaks the postseason roster limits (20 skaters, up to 2 goalies), will now go to the Tournament Management Committee and the Board of Directors for approval. The committee voted down a proposal that would have set pre-game warm-up time at five minutes. Currently, it is “up to seven minutes.”
▪ Boston College’s Conte Forum is not available for the Sunday of a semifinal weekend because of a Mass, so the committee discussed holding semifinals on Saturday or Monday in order to use the arena still. The Tsongas Center in Lowell is also available. The finals, set for March 14, will be at TD Garden.
▪ St. John’s Prep junior Alex Partridge, a 6-foot-1-inch long-stick middie and defenseman from Lexington, declared his commitment to play Division 1 men’s lacrosse at Quinnipiac.
▪ Tabor junior Nolan DeVito, a 6-1 defenseman from Barnstable announced his commitment to play D1 men’s lacrosse at Boston University.
▪ Thayer Academy junior Tommy Lally, a 6-foot attack from Norwell, has committed to play D1 men’s lacrosse at Denver.
▪ Tabor junior Mason Carr, a 5-10 midfielder from Mansfield, has committed to play D1 men’s lacrosse at Mercer University in Macon, Ga.
▪ Phillips Andover senior Michael Vallarelli, a 6-7, 220-pound tight end/defensive end from Andover, has committed to play football at Dartmouth.
▪ Bishop Stang senior Ben “Bubba” Garcia will play baseball at Wentworth, Duxbury senior Catherine Grimaldi will play softball at Bates, Duxbury junior Cam Heald will play men’s lacrosse at Bentley, Pembroke senior setter and right-side hitter Meghan Murray will play women’s volleyball at Southern New Hampshire, East Longmeadow senior outfielder Max Carlin will play baseball at Husson, and St. Sebastian’s senior Tim Civello, from Weymouth, will play men’s basketball at Grinnell.
▪ Holy Cross sophomore John Scully, a Winchester graduate, was named Patriot League golf honorable mention after tying for fifth place with a 1-over-par 145 at the rain-shortened UConn Invitational at GreatHorse in Hampden.
▪ Williams senior Emma Abramson, a Sandwich graduate, was named NESCAC Women’s Golfer of the Week. She finished the first round of the Ephs home invitational at Taconic Golf Club with a 4-over-par 75. She rallied with five birdies on the second day for a 2-under 69, which left her atop the leaderboard for the first time since her freshman year.
▪ Connecticut College senior William Hurd, a Tabor graduate from West Dennis, was named an NEISA Open Sailor of the Week in the B Division after defeating Dartmouth twice and claiming the Sherman Hoyt Trophy at Brown.
