Glover Teixeira agrees to Shogun Rua rematch despite UFC legends urging the Hall of Famer to retire

Anderson Silva wants Shogun Rua to call it quits, but Glover Teixeira is willing to meet him in the ring again.

The two former UFC light heavyweight champions headlined the latest Spaten Fight Night event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last Saturday.

Teixeira laid a brutal beatdown on Rua during their main event boxing match, knocking his fellow countryman down en route to a convincing eight-round victory.

Rua had suggested he would hang up the gloves after the bout, which came over three years after he was knocked out by Ihor Potieria in his last MMA fight. Instead, the UFC Hall of Famer wants a rematch.

GSP left the sport on top after sustaining limited damage inside the Octagon.

Teixeira, who became the oldest first-time champion in UFC history by submitting Jan Blachowicz in 2021, was also making his first competitive appearance since his retirement at UFC 283.

Both his and Rua’s comebacks came at the third Spaten Fight Night event. The first ended with Anderson Silva’s trilogy match against Chael Sonnen, while the second concluded with a wild brawl after Wanderlei Silva was disqualified for headbutting Acelino Freitas.

With Alex Pereira in his corner, Teixeira had his hand raised after dominating Rua in a match that some fans described as too brutal to watch.

Despite the defeat, Rua did not retire and pitched another match against his compatriot inside the ring. Many have pushed back on that, including ‘The Spider’. Just recently, Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman backed Silva’s call for Rua to retire.

Teixeira, however, would be willing to put another beatdown on the 44-year-old.

“Shogun was also a great warrior, a guy who definitely trained a lot to be there and put on a show like that,” Teixeira said in a video posted on his Instagram account.

“About Shogun, the rematch is more than deserved. The guy fought, the guy put on a show, and for sure, if you want to do it again, let’s do it Shogun.

“I’ll be ready. Let’s have fun once more and put on a show,” he added.

Teixeira’s comments may not please the likes of Silva, who do not wish to see the legendary UFC Hall of Famer sustaining more damage years on from his final mixed martial arts outing.

It remains to be seen whether Spaten Fight Night or another organization would be willing to stage Teixeira vs Rua 2.
