Gold Coast rising star Cooper Bai next on PNG’s hit list

The Chiefs are actively looking to recruit young star Cooper Bai, who toured the PNG facility on Wednesday.

Rising NRL star Cooper Bai is actively exploring his options for 2028 and is currently in Port Moresby touring the PNG Chiefs′ facilities.

The visit comes after Bai’s management formally advised the Titans that the young forward will not extend his contract on the Gold Coast beyond the 2027 season.

In response, the Titans have granted Bai’s camp permission to negotiate with rival franchises for 2028 ahead of the traditional November 1 window, though the club emphasised Bai remains firmly contracted for the 2027 season.

Addressing the impending departure, Titans head coach Josh Hannay emphasised the club’s internal depth while wishing the 19-year-old well in his opportunities.

“We have some outstanding young middle forwards coming through, including Bodhi Sharpley, Viliami Fifita and Torino Jackson, who we believe can become key members of our squad in the coming seasons,” Hannay said.

“Cooper has grown a lot as a player and a person over the past 12 months, and we’re proud to have played a part in supporting his development.”

While the incoming PNG Chiefs remain the clear frontrunners to secure Bai’s services, they face potential heavy-hitting competition.

According to sources from the Sydney Morning Herald, the Sydney Roosters are reportedly weighing a bid, alongside the Melbourne Storm - a club with deep family ties, where Bai’s father, Marcus Bai, became a fan favourite over 144 NRL appearances between 1998 and 2003.

The PNG connection carries a subplot given his father Marcus Bai currently sits on the Chiefs’ board.

However, the former Storm player has confirmed he will step back from any involvement in the recruitment process to ensure there is no conflict of interest.

Should the 19-year-old sign with the Chiefs, Bai would be the latest addition to a massive expansion recruitment drive.

The Port Moresby-based club is already assembling a formidable roster, having secured Zac Lomax, Alex Johnston, Joey Manu, Connor Watson and Matty Lees among their first seven marquee signings.
