Fergus Greene, Rebecca Smith, and Lily Campbell claim top honors at the Sandhurst Dragons best and fairest presentation night.
Greene, Smith, Campbell snare top Dragons awards

Former AFL forward Fergus Greene, goal shooter Rebecca Smith and Lily Campbell have claimed Sandhurst’s top awards for season 2027.

The trio were crowned the best and fairest winners of their respective Dragons teams – Greene as the senior football winner, Smith in A-grade netball and Campbell as the standout senior women’s footballer.

The winners were unveiled at the club’s presentation night last Thursday.

Greene, co-coach of the Dragons this season and captain of the BFNL’s interleague team, capped a magnificent individual season by winning the Sandy McPherson/Leo Hartney Award for the first-time.

Matt Wilkinson finished as runner-up.

Sharpshooter Smith took out the Dragons’ A-grade netball best and fairest ahead of a stellar field of contenders.

Fellow Dragons four-time premiership star Meg Williams finished as runner-up, with fellow midcourter Shae Clifford taking out the MVP award, after finishing runner-up in this year’s league best and fairest – the Betty Thompson Medal – the same award she won in 2025.

In other notable netball awards, Elle Gilchrist (15-and-under) and Ese Phillips (17-and-under) replicated their league medal wins by adding club best and fairest awards.

It was a one-two finish for the Campbell sisters in the senior women’s football voting, with Lily claiming the top award ahead of Ruby.

Another sibling Grace took out the goalkicking award.

Meanwhile, the Dragons have announced the return of one of their favourite sons Lee Coghlan as joint coach of the senior football team alongside best and fairest winner Greene.

A former club captain and 200-gamer, Coghlan won the Michelsen Medal as a Dragon in 2009 and was a key player in the club’s 2016 premiership win.

He departed at the end of the 2023 season to join Bridgewater, where his football career kicked-off, but is now heading back to guide the club into its next chapter.

The club confirmed his appointment via its Facebook page ahead of last week’s presentation night.

“The appointment brings together two highly respected Sandhurst people with strong football knowledge, leadership qualities and deep connection to the club,” the statement read.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lee, Amy and family back to Sandhurst and look forward to seeing Lee and Fergus lead the Demons into the next chapter.”

Coghlan takes over the reins from Bryce Curnow, who co-coached alongside Ash Connick in 2023, Lachlan Tardrew in 2024-25 and Greene this season, helping lead the Dragons to four consecutive grand final appearances and a premiership in 2024.
