For 34 seasons, Chad Isaly has been a constant on the Grizzell Middle School football sidelines. The eighth-grade coach took over the program in the 1990s and has spent more than three decades helping young players develop on and off the field.
Isaly said the relationships and growth he has seen from his players are what made him return season after season. Over the years, he also built a coaching staff that shared his enthusiasm for the middle-school game.
“A lot of the coaches that I’ve worked with have been former head coaches, and they come down and they enjoy coaching football at the middle school level,” Isaly said. “They have fun with it just as much as I do. ” Among the hundreds of players Isaly coached was former Notre Dame quarterback and NFL player Brady Quinn.
Quinn played for Isaly as an eighth grader and remembers a coach who made football enjoyable while still demanding a physical brand of play.
“I mean, it was fun,” Quinn said. “Football can be a lot of fun, and he made it fun. But also, we were physical. We weren’t afraid to go after teams and put up a lot of points.
” Quinn’s team went undefeated, and he said the lessons Isaly taught have stayed with him long after middle school.
“If there’s one thing that I’ve taken from a lot of lessons with Chad Isaly, it’s I can never pay him back for what he gave us when I was in eighth grade,” Quinn said. “But you can always pay it forward. ” As Isaly prepares to coach his final game, he said he is leaving on his own terms — grateful for the families, players and memories that made the years go by quickly.
“It’s fulfilling. I feel great about it,” Isaly said.
“I’m going out on my own terms. It’s been a great ride. I’ve really enjoyed it.
