“He Legit Can’t Sit in a Pocket Without Panicking”: Former NFL DT Questions Bryce Young’s Long-Term Potential After Packers Loss

Bryce Young’s tough night against the Green Bay Packers has sparked a debate about the Carolina Panthers quarterback’s long-term potential. While the Panthers’ offensive line struggled to protect him throughout Thursday night’s 27-19 loss, former NFL defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko believes Young’s performance highlights a bigger concern.

Fehoko took to social media after the game to question whether Young’s physical limitations could keep him from becoming a consistent NFL quarterback.

“Bryce Young is the pure example of why NFL execs made a huge deal about his height. He legit can’t sit in a pocket without panicking,” Fehoko wrote.

He also questioned Carolina’s reliance on run-pass options, suggesting that the approach may not provide a sustainable long-term solution.

“The whole offense is RPO, and that isn’t sustainable. I hate being a measurables-matter guy, but at the QB position if my guy can’t see over my OL I don’t want him,” Fehoko added.

The former NFL player pointed to Drew Brees and Russell Wilson as examples of shorter quarterbacks who found sustained success in the league. ESPN lists Young at 5-foot-10.

Young’s struggles against Green Bay came in a difficult situation for Carolina. The Panthers were playing on a short week and entered the matchup dealing with several injuries.

The Packers took full advantage, recording six sacks and nine quarterback hits. According to ESPN’s Mike Kaye, Young faced pressure on 22 dropbacks, tying his career high.

He threw for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Head coach Dave Canales also faced questions after the defeat for attempting a two-point conversion following Jalen Coker’s fourth-quarter touchdown.

Carolina was trailing 27-13 when Coker’s score cut the deficit to eight. Rather than kick the extra point, Canales opted to go for two, but Young tipped the pass, and it fell incomplete.

“For me, it was about knowing what you’re gonna do on the next one. So, felt good about that one. We had a nice play that we really liked, based on what they were doing. Had an opportunity there in the back of the end zone. But unfortunately, had two guys in the same spot really going for the ball,” he said.

“And that’s another thing, too-is when we put the ball in Bryce’s hands, he created, he extended and he had a couple of guys open there. They [Packers] did a great job of getting their hand on the ball, getting it tipped.”

Canales explained that he made the call based on his confidence in the play and what the team might need later in the game.

The Panthers ultimately fell to 3-4, leaving Young and the offense with plenty to address.
