Here's what Vikings fans need to see from Kyler Murray against the Packers in Week 1.

All eyes will be on Kyler Murray when the Vikings welcome the Packers to town in Week 1. Here's what the veteran QB can do to put fans' doubts to rest.
Here's what Vikings fans need to see from Kyler Murray against the Packers in Week 1.

The Vikings kick off their season against the Packers in less than a week, and with a new season comes a new veteran starting quarterback. But he's not like anyone else the team has had before.

Finding an athletic talent like Kyler Murray is a rare occurrence.

The former Heisman-winning, number-one overall pick, first-round MLB selection, put together quite the highlight tape throughout his time as an Arizona Cardinal. His patented evasiveness and mobility allowed him to make plays other NFL quarterbacks simply aren’t capable of. He also proved he had strong arm talent along the way. Still, doubts frequently emerged around his ability to play winning football consistently.

Murray’s size, decision-making, and durability have long been talking points for critics, and when you watch some of his past performances, it's fair to see why. In fact, as a former Arizona resident, I often saw it in person. Murray could wow you by evading pressure and throwing a great deep ball down the sideline, only to have a series eventually end on an inaccurate pass over the middle of the field.

So far, the Murray experience has been a roller coaster, but Sunday presents a unique chance to redefine the narrative and prove his doubters wrong.

One interesting take that kept reappearing in offseason social media discourse was the insinuation that Murray was an untalented bust of a QB. Whether it was divisional rivals, a subset of disgruntled Cardinals fans, or die-hard J.J. McCarthy supporters, the Murray slander reached some truly unhinged levels these past few months. But to insinuate that Murray lacks potential and ability is simply choosing to ignore reality.

Don’t get me wrong, the downsides to Murray’s game are more than apparent, but his unique ability to extend plays and force defenders to run around like a game of cat and mouse makes him a nightmare to game plan around.

Murray has a career 17-game average of 3,998 passing yards, 24 passing TDs, and 12 interceptions. This beats the same averages of former Vikings QB and 2025 Super Bowl Champion Sam Darnold: 3,473 yards, 21 TDs, and 14 INTs. That's not even accounting for Murray’s average of 624 yards and 6 TDs on the ground.

While there’s always more to the story than just statistical production, one can’t help but be excited about the potential of pairing Murray with Kevin O’Connell’s explosive offense. Murray provided multiple highlight-worthy throws (h/t Vikings) and plays during training camp, sparking optimism from the fanbase.

Murray's mobility could also add an entirely new wrinkle to a Vikings offense already stacked with playmakers and big-play potential. With Micah Parsons out this week for the Packers, Murray will need to take advantage of the opportunity to play his style of ball without the threat of one of the best defenders in the league hunting him down.

The best way for Murray to prove the doubters wrong on Sunday? Avoid the mental missteps that have plagued him in the past.

The former Cardinal will already have his work cut out for him, stepping into a new offense with entirely different points of emphasis than his previous experience in the league. Making smart decisions from the pocket while downfield routes develop will be essential in running O’Connell’s system. Murray will also need to prove he can make the simple throws in the middle of the field that have been a point of inconsistency throughout his career.

While his mobility will be a great addition to the unit, overreliance on bailing from the pocket could shut down what O’Connell wants to do, creating chaos along the way. Simply put: patience is key for everyone involved.

If Murray can navigate the pocket effectively, create sightlines around his massive offensive line, and let plays develop, he has proven to have more than enough accuracy to deliver passes with precision. If he doesn’t see what he likes, he can always turn the jets on.

Assuming he can put it all together on Sunday, there's reason to believe Murray's jersey will be a hot commodity for Vikings fans come Monday.
